In your opinion, how does player shipyards fix X4?
You can try as much as you want to make a biased list, but every point you made is nothing but an interpretation of what you actually do in Elite. You've tried to give more weight to Elite, and yet the points you tried to make just sway more more towards X4. Elite is as dull as expected. Land on planets? dead lifeless planets. More planets? Big deal, again they all look the same, and if you can land on them, since you cannot land on every planet, just the dead lifeless ones. Multiplayer? Another point in X4's favor since it doesn't have any. The only real point in Elite's favor is combat, but combat isn't really a main focus in X4, and as such, the combat that is there is fine.
People keep trying to hold Elite up as some grand pinnacle of accomplishment. but in reality, it's dull, boring, and there just really isn't much variety in what you can do. You pilot a ship. That's it. Fly from point A to point B, and do it over, and over, and over again.
X offers much more variety in gameplay and things to do. If all you want to do is fly a ship, then Elite is probably the game for you. But if you want to actually accomplish something, or build something then X4 is probably the game to stick with,. If you want a combination of both, then NMS might be the best fit. it's not a bad arcade game. it at least offers more to do than Elite does that's for sure.
What Elite Dangerous tries to do isn't nearly as much fun as what X4 tries to do, but it achieves it to near perfection. There is wonder in the game, especially if you're at all into astronomy.
That said, even now - warts and all - there is much more to do, and much more variety in X4.
Both games have their own sort of grinding, but in X4 you can do anything else you like while your employees grind. Walk off, play the game doing whatever you like in your own ship, whatever. In Elite Dangerous the grinding is much worse and it all requires you to be at the controls of your ship, concentrating on that grinding process and enduring it yourself. The rewards take significantly longer to show up and are imo significantly less interesting and varied.
I'd play ED while X4 gets patched up, that should be good for 50-100 hours before it plays like a deserted MMO. By that time X should be patched up a bit and will be the better game.
X4 is a game that is 1 mile wide but also 1 mile deep.
While I think X4, at it's core, is much better game than ED. It is very incomplete and pretty badly broken at this point. If you buy it you probably won't notice anything major for the first 30 or so hours. As you progress, things that are wrong become very noticable.
Wasn't trying to give elite more weight to elite lol, i just stated what the two games offer in comparrison.
That flying to point A and B in elite isn't defineing truth, because i didn't do that when i played the game. I did what i do in all X-Games hunt pirates or be a pirate.
Very true, but we aren't talking about X Games we are talking about X4. Also there is only three real differences between X4 and Elite if you could sum it up.
X4 Builds stations
X4 Has wingman and hireable crew.
X4 Use to be single player, which use to be a huge plus.
Other then that they have the same M.O.
Mfg
@OP:
The difference between ED and X4 is as followed: In ED, you goal is to get your shipyard upgraded with various kinds of ships for different types of gamestyle. Mining, passenger taxi, trader, bounty hunter, pvpler, alien hunter or explorer. Each of these aspects can be very grindy if you focus on only one. It offers an AAA VR support (VRtop5) and really lovely graphics -and it's really often in sales.
X4 gives you the opportunity to built up your own empire (in comparison with ED: you own faction) . Built up your own stations, industry chains and war fleet with hundreds of ships. And you can select each ship on the map to teleport directly to it -and fly it. The devs are really devotedly to this serie, and fixes coming nearly each two weeks (beta join required).
For sure, ED is stable as duck, but X4 has the right 'foundation' to be something big -because of bugfixing in all cardinal directions.
You cannot compare X4 with ED for real. Its like you compare FIFA with a football manager game. Two different games for people with different expectations.
Watch a handfull of streams from both games. Because one stream says nothing. Google a bit for the communities and their goals and gamestyles.
TLDR: I like both, you should get em both, too. ED is cheap in sales, with great graphics. X4 is a BIG space-fleet-war-sim ! :)
It won't fix it all by itself, Too many bugs and rough edges and other unimplmented aspects.
but it will certainly be a dramatic improvement even if you are a shameless apologist.
IT will give a much more solid experience for the whole "It's a sandbox, make your own fun lol" angle.
Player owned shipyards give people a better industry end goal than 'uh... I made credits again!' and having to cater to idiots who can't even keep their own shipyards running half the time for your ships. It makes it more practical to decide you want to go to war with Xenon/Khaak or even half the galaxy.
It will even (provided they work right) take off some of the edge of having to deal with the economy being too brain dead to stop from stalling regularly if you want your ship types of choice. Then whenever the Devs get around to smoothing that out, allows you to still field ships of your choice even if you become enemies with the people who make those ships.
Or at the very least make a more practical locataion for production, like if you enjoy the ALI's small fighter but would rather build them by the mega highway loop rather than the little corner of space their lonely wharf is.
On that example, an ALI themed playthrough would practically require player shipyards currently, because ALI doesn't make mining ships of any type, and their shipyard has no L ships of any type. only the XL builder.
Though I wonder if there will be any settings to ban NPCs from buying ships from you. Your traders may be 'smarter' in the sense you WANT them to keep things running. But I can easily imagine opening up your brand new shipyard only for NPCs to rush it with trash orders because oh look, the TEL wharf shut down again.
Having to wait through the queue at your own shipyard after you haul in all the parts personally. I'd hate to place money on it not being a possibility.
You do know the real reason to own a player shipyard is to be a pirate? Since any faction you pirate is going to hate you and never sell to you.
But it wont fix the bugs, fps, lack of content or immersion.
Also, do you mean genuine 'keep yourself in the game mindset 'immersion, or faux 'I need cherry picked inconveniences that I claim are 'realistic' to interrupt my video game full of killer robots and space aliens!' immersion?
I tell yah. You gotta watch anyone who lists 'immersion' as their concern or you get people demanding hours of sitting around in a decompression chamber in a sci-fi scuba game that lets you fabricate fish into sports bottles and punch wormhole opening cyborg aliens with an exo suit.
Not having to crack open a 'known bugs' list or a wiki for basic mechanics is actual video game immersion. The 'just one more turn' effect is the true goal for such things.
Immersion as in i have 200 ship mates, i only see 5.
Immersion i have a ship that can hold 40 ships but i can't go below deck to repair them or upgrade them.
Immersion i can walk around stations and my ship i can even hold a gun, but i can't joining a boarding party.
Immersion i have a 1000 employees but i'm the one forced to go out into space to repair a ship.
I could do this for a month.
This was what I thought about it too after a hundred hours or so. It's a bad game design, flawlessly executed. It's really fun to play in short spurts but it fails on several levels to live up to how I imagined a multiplayer version of Elite 2 would be back when I was a dreaming teenager.
X4 isn't multiplayer, but it's honestly a better game for it. I still like Elite and I'll go back to it from time to time to experience it, because it's a beautifully made engine, but it's just really lacking in depth.
Is this any good? Been on my wishlist for ages and keep dodging it on the sales somehow.
For all the issues with the AI etc all in X4, at least "Hey I'm bored scooping rocks myself" in X4 is "Get other ships to do it for you, duh". Not people vomiting out "This is oldschool!" and then bribing NASA to send the goalposts to Mars turning when you bring up the actual oldschool elite games had automatic mining machines. But boy to I miss the style of my ED ships when flying around.
ED has so much good going for it, but it is true that it's most absent aspects are where X games normally go "Hey guys, I let you do that!".
No matter how much some X fans are clearly ED fans in disguise. "Hay guys I think travel drive OP! plz throw Travel drive in the garbage for mu bragging righs-I mean, challenge. I am a true fan of X games not a spy infiltrating the forums."
