X4 is great, it’s basically like this. Someone gives you a massive box of LEGO’s. The directions are long gone. And as you play you noticed that in your large box of LEGO’s are mixed in some wood blocks that don’t fit anything. There is not a lot of them, but enough to annoy you when you grab one by accident.
But your free to build what you want. And maybe you might find some help on YouTube what you can build.
If it feels like something is missing, that's because it IS (for now) even ignoring the subject of mini quest lines.
When it comes to understandable guidposts between making your own fun, more polish should round out the guild missions, and hopeful content additions should round out the player HQ stuff. (Like, what does the ALI 'exploration guild membership' even do?)
I'm glad that the racial starts come with no rep so you can pick an argon or paranid without any baggage to start. But more unlockable starts down the line will hopefully fast track you into wars and piracy. Much like the current unlockable start is intended to fast track you into being a trade baron (Free M trader ship to go with your dirt cheap product empty sunrise flower factory).
Really? That answer is so played out and lazy it's amazing you'd even know what do given a box of legos with the instructions intact, let alone a sandbox.
Thanks for not being a condescending fedora flipping ♥♥♥♥ like Lazer.
"As a Paranid, do I side with the traditional PAR? Or the HOP in their one man war against literally everyone-oh, it's been one hour since I started this save and both PAR and HOP (and TEL) have had their Wharf's grind to a halt.... Civil war over already guys, pack it up."
It's just not QUITE the same building a trade empire to fund a war effort, when you'd need to play both sides for there to be a war in the first place.
More polish will also make it easier to run a more peaceful minded run where you become the biggest racially specific food vendor in the galaxy without consulting a list of UI and AI quirks. (oh my what a coincidence someone keeps hacking all the cattle and snail farms).
Progress is being made. For example, MIN isn't bugged to prevent you from ranking up properly anymore. But they still tend to end up with single didgit station counts making it a pain to rank up with them personally. (ALI wins the award of least stations per game, and they don't sell mining ships or even L ships of any type so will have the biggest hurdles even in a perfect simulation).
Both can be hard at times but they're patching it.
SCA has a line of code saying "You are stuck at rank -5 son". airquotes "joining" them talking to a guy at their bar if you find their HQ doesn't seem to change that. (SCA why do you even offer a trade sub at the faction Rep when you are locked out of getting rep to buy it come oooooooon)
Normal and Guild missions lead to nothing, and only reward credits or crafting items.
Factions will never take another faction sector, thus the war is meaningless.
You can't give another faction a sector, you can only claim it for yourself.
Claiming a sector has no benefits.
The only questline ends when you unlock your HQ and the research tree.
Your HQ functions just like any other player station with no bonus at all.
The research tree unlocks teleportation, ships modifications and station hacking.
The entirety of the game is this:
"Get money to get ships and stations to get money".
There's really no story at this point in time - it's pure sandbox.
I strongly advice that you go check out X3: Albion Prelude or X3: Terran Conflict. Come back in a year and maybe X4 will be in a workable state. What we have now is a late-stage alpha release.
