Quasar
Worst ship in game, a slow version of the pulsar with only 4 guns
Eclipse

Con: low firepower
Buzzard
Pro: Best HP of them all
Con: Slow
Falcon
Pro: Good HP, don´t need any military licens
Con: Decent speed but acceleration sucks and only 2 weapon slots
Perseus
Pro: Fastest fighter by far, don´t need any military licens
Con: Only 2 weapon slots it´s decent hull health but only 1 shield
Theseus
No con or pro really 3 guns average speed and HP
Looks like none of these are as useful as I like.
You could throw Kestrel in there. One gun and I think one shield. Soooo yea not the best but hey, another early game ship.
again, my personal choice :)
same with shields.
Meanwhile, the Teladi Falcon has been a wonderful "Only half paying attention" exploration fighter. It may only have 2 guns, and it might not be as fast as a paranid ship. But 4k hull and 3k shields is a wonderful saftey buffer on something that still gets 4.5 travel speed.
They can make a difference, but ship hulls matter more overall.
For example, switching the argon shield for a teladi one on the Elite Vanguard does raise it's shields by a bit. But that's still nothing compared to fighters that get 2 shield slots.
The Kestrel is out of the picture one gun and not listed as a fighter, just a stupiet design :-)
Thought about the corvette class, but then some will go larger and its just a question about ship class. Also the fighter class description has a aim to get something that works well on the long run for protection of miners, traders and such, though i havent seen the need for it yet, or just wingmen if you wanna go hunting without the larger and slower ships.
It's:
1) Cheap (Very cheap)
2) Has enough hull HP to not die too quickly
3) Has 2 weapon slots
4) Looks cool in packs

If i had the option to take 40 defence drones i'd not bother with fighters at all.
Cuz like drones are very cheap and disposable firepower.
Try attacking some xenon defence platform and face it's 100 drones.
you can give it a slight boost if you use paranid engines.
i've foun teladi has the best shields and paranids has the best engines.
paranid all'round engine is cheaper than teladi combat and out performs it as well
Main draw of the Elite is the "You wont notice it it until it's gone" tight as hell handling (Also makes for amusing tight angle turns in turning travel mode off and on again).
Maybe also to do with that vague 'responsivness' stat not shown in the shipyard shops, the encyclopedia (One of the few cases of the Encylopedia listing anything of note). Elite Vanguard has 5.732 responsivness.
Scout ships for Argon and Paranid have response stats in the 3 point range.
Meanwhile, that 6 gun Pulsar has 1.817. And the fast as hell top speed paranid fighters also have 1.8 range for that stat.
I guess that's why it's considered an "Interceptor" even though other Argon fighters get a better top speed. It 's designed to make it easier to try and play space ace with a plasma gun / Keep enemy fighters in your sights as easy as possible.
401 m/s standard speed, over 4,000 m/s travel speed. Modestly armed, but more than fast enough to dictate the flow of battle. I've been using it as my personal unit ever since I found it.
Also, the way it looks... I've named mine R-Type DELTA.
ITS FREAKING UGLY AF!
That is the reason i dont fly it, i fly the heavy fighter from the teladi, it has higher shields and slighty higher hull, but only 3 weapons.
Corvette is slower, but stronger than any fighter, yet has mainly front weapons, not turrets, any other - larger class - like frigate has mostly turrets, absolutly useless mess ATM
