Anti-missile defense strategy
Hello everyone,

In short: how do you not get blasted by missiles?

Long version: I got a reasonably sized trade empire that funded my own personal frigate. Now, I'm starting to get into fights with bigger ships that have tracking missiles, and trying to figure out how to deal with them, with very little success yet...
My typical testing situation is trying to take down a Helios (L civilian ship) with a gorgon (frigate) + a few eclipse fighters (heavy S fighters).

Option 1: countermeasures. They obviously work, but you have a very limited supply of them. Not enough for long-term engagements

Option 2: turrets set to fire against missiles. I picked beam emitters for that, because they have the highest projectile speed, which is normally a key factor against missiles. Well, result is they fire at the missiles all right, but I have yet to see them actually destroy a missile. Wrong turret type?

Option 3: something I've not thought about?

I'd like to know what you people use in anti-missile warfare.

I'd like to know this too. I'm trying to do some pirating to gain some ships/money. I'm currently using a Cerberus with bolt turrets set to defense. I'm really not able to tell if they are stopping any of the incoming missles. Whether they are or not the results are really underwhelming. I keep getting destroyed. My opponent is a gas mining magnetar. Apparently Bolt turrets are not the answer.

Anyone have any advice?

Shard Cannons work pretty good, as far as I can tell :D I mean, I wouldnt just sit still and risk my life on it or anything but I dodged a few missles in my Gorgon and figured the turrets must of got them.

I tell one of my crew members to simply stick his head out the window and give the missile a mean look! =profit

@Faptor, thanks mate. I read another post that mentioned shard cannons too and decided to try it and I seem to be surviving a little better. Though it's kind of hard to tell if they're the result or me changing over to dual tracker weapons to take out turrents is. Probably a little of both.

@Upcoming, lol. I caught one of mine playing Galaga instead of doing his job. My solution was to suit him up and duct tape him to the hull where the most incoming fire was striking.... Not surprisingly, Galaga seems to have been deleted from my ships computers as a result. :)

Hi. At the top of your screen while flying is a set of turret settings. We also now have turret behaviour settings for ships you are not in. I think you can set both of these options for turrets to missile defence.

Select ship - info - turret behaviour

I am unsure what weapon type is best for missile defence.

edit - note that the combat ai is far better if you are NOT actually in the fight. The fact that your turrets don't hit missiles while you are flying it is one area it really shows this. It's dreadfully poor when you are there. Works OK'ish when you are not. Kinda.

Not sure if you are protecting your empire, pirating random vessels, or expanding into hostile sectors... At any rate, you should be able to build missile heavy turret defense stations at strategic locations, either forcing them to pass by or luring them in to get hammered. It is a pain to initially stock them with missiles, but once stocked they resupply pretty well.
