Data Vault?
What is a Data Vault and what Can I do with it? Cause.... it looks like it's something important, I droped a beacon near it just in case I need to come back there. And if you get near it, you hear static.

They're worth it if you figure them out.

You'll have to use your space suit and repair laser to get the goodies out of it... Look for the little red displays to repair, on the 2 round parts of the station

It's pretty weird but you need to use your repair laser to repair all the red displays. It usually takes a few seconds.

press ENTER to get out of the capt chair
go to the teleporter to get into the space suit
BACKSPACE halts all movement in the space suit
use the repair laser on the bright red stuff to open doors on the vault
after 3 or 4 repairs there might be some loot
click on your ship and request dock to open the hatch

i found a data vault after the 2nd tutorial and it was a frakkin nightmare trying to cobble all this info together.
also, it's a million times easier to strafe around and inspect the locker while you're in your ship.

First, this is part of the main quest chain. You need to complete first the main quest that unlocks PHQ in order to been able to complete Data Vault discovery. Here a guide on how you can find and make this quest: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmUaijgOteQ

Once done this quest you can hack those data vaults and not only collect valuable loots but also scan the data leaks inside this vaults that discover some historical information about sectors and faction will be shown in the in-game wiki. If you are curious about x series story you can do this activity. Here a guide about how to open data vault and some tips and trick about this activity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPj25Obs2Uk

There are 28 in a total of these structures hidden around sectors. If you want to know all locations you can find them in this guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uov75RxZu8M

I have found more than 28 Data Vaults, even some that has tracking mines in them that will explode after you open it...but if you survive( which I have) It was well worth the damage.

Can you provide the location and the sector you find it?

When you open the data vaults and scan the data leak, you get access to a new timeline addition the the encyclopedia. Basically it is a short narrated, semi-animated presentation of a bit of history from the X games. So not critical to the game, but interesting nonetheless the see.

I feel such a twit lol. I couldn't work out what was happening to the data I'd decrypted from the vaults I'd found. Didn't see the timeline. I found the data there interesting, now I want to find the rest (got 6 so far). I know there are guides to the locations, but I want to try and find them myself :steamhappy:

There is a data vault in most if not all sectors. There is an achievement for getting all of them.

edit:
I don't think there is a way (on map) of telling whether you have completed a data vault. I wish they would add that. I can never remember which I have opened.

would you guys care to elaborate why you resurrected a topic that was dead since early 2019?

also... last time i checked a "completed" vault compared to an untouched Vault... has a slightly different color... sort of easy to miss.

not to mention the good old "drop a beacon near the empty vault" method...

i will not lock the topic this time since it was on topic and actually added to it... next time though, please leave dead topics allone.

I think that was me. However, if one googles for info and a topic is shown, that's usually why comments are added at a later date. Not everyone has been playing the game for years, some of us are newcomers.

Also, I rarely look at the date a topic was written. I'm more interested in the substance.

fair enough... in any way, welcome to the community.

and we should let the topic rest now... until the next necromancer shows up. ;)
