Yeah that's the vibe I'm getting, it's a shame too because I like flying huge ships but Elite does not scratch that itch.
But - in the X games combat difficulty has historically scaled up with your "Fight" rank. If you look at the bottom of your Statistics tab in your Information panel, you'll see both a Trade and Fight rank. I fully expect that as people kill more enemies, that will have an effect on future encounters.

x might not have good dog fighting, but it sure has awesome big capital ship battles :)
I don't understand, how can the capital ship battles be interesting if combat is not ?
EvE online, Elite, Star Citizen, Rebel Galaxy 1 (and upcoming 2), Dual Universe
All of these have a nice feeling combat system, be it physically or graphically.
X4 just looks and plays so dated in terms of combat. It does not feel fun or engaging compared to this list.
With the capital battles its something totally different. standing on the bridge of one and watching huge ships and their fighters trying to destroy each other is pretty fun. Like being star wars or something. The dogfighting is pretty basic. I like it but elite deffinitely has better fighter combat But no where near the complexity that X4 has.
Where before you had the option for more guns even on a small ship but had an energy bar and recharge rate to balance usage on a ship by ship basis, this also allowed role loadouts to a degree too as the additional weapon slots allowed a few weapon groups meant for engaging specific targets.
X4 has weapon groups but other than the launchers theres not much point so far as the few weapons available now lack considerable differences in range etc.
The new turrets are just awful, at least on the M class ships. The range on them is pathetic meaning the fighters can safely volley you and zoom by and the turrets get a few shots and then have to slowly track to the other side, worse the turrets stop tracking an enemy that leaves thier range, rather than track the target until its in range then fire it has to completey re-aim with every pass.
I havent tried missiles yet as they no longer have an integrated launcher and I dont think I can trust my ai captains to manage a limited ammo pool well.
