Is the combat as bad as it looks ?
On the fence about buying, I mainly like combat but after looking at YouTube videos the combat seems.. without sounding too harsh but almost terrible ?

Weapons sound weak and effects look dull just to name two. Is it worth just waiting until mods are released to fix these weak points ? I'd like to fly a missile ship but can't find any videos of missiles at the moment.

Elite might be shallow but it did look and play perfectly so maybe X4 is only looking and sounding quite dull to me because I am coming from that game where the graphics and sounds are top notch.

X4 is not the good choice if you're after a space dogfighting sim. Elite is indeed the one focused more on that.

Yeah that's the vibe I'm getting, it's a shame too because I like flying huge ships but Elite does not scratch that itch.

Dogfighting is not really it's thing. Its more of an empire building singleplayer EVE Online-ish massive economy, massive battlefleet, this is my pile of crap so backoff all other space nations. Look at my pile of loot its guarded by "Smaug the Deathstar" of all ships and his merry little band of a million space gnats.

Awww man. My heart sank a little reading this thread. Great dog fights would be the icing on the cake for me. Hmm.

Dogfighting gets *much* more interesting in X4 when you get multiple ships all engaging at the same time. 1v1 dogfighting is still a bit mundane - either the larger ship wins, or the faster ship outflies it's weapon arcs and whittles it down slowly. The AI isn't nearly as good as a human for dogfighting either.

But - in the X games combat difficulty has historically scaled up with your "Fight" rank. If you look at the bottom of your Statistics tab in your Information panel, you'll see both a Trade and Fight rank. I fully expect that as people kill more enemies, that will have an effect on future encounters.

Dreadnought might be what you are looking for:

Damn that sucks to hear. What's the point in having huge ships with massive weapon hard points ? Seem almost like combat is just an after thought
Honestly, X is more about logistics than combat. You can build a huge mercenary fleet to take on any challenge, but you also have to build the factories than support it. It was immensely satisfying to see cargo ships automatically resupply my torpedo cruisers in X3AP. Not everyone is into that, though.

x might not have good dog fighting, but it sure has awesome big capital ship battles :)

I don't understand, how can the capital ship battles be interesting if combat is not ?

EvE online, Elite, Star Citizen, Rebel Galaxy 1 (and upcoming 2), Dual Universe

All of these have a nice feeling combat system, be it physically or graphically.

X4 just looks and plays so dated in terms of combat. It does not feel fun or engaging compared to this list.

By combat they mean dogfighting, flying a ship to attack another ship.
With the capital battles its something totally different. standing on the bridge of one and watching huge ships and their fighters trying to destroy each other is pretty fun. Like being star wars or something. The dogfighting is pretty basic. I like it but elite deffinitely has better fighter combat But no where near the complexity that X4 has.

Capital ship don't do dogfighting fight due raw power, crazy high shield and hull, more of duel combat rather than dogfight combat

Combat is odd in this one and a bit limited.

Where before you had the option for more guns even on a small ship but had an energy bar and recharge rate to balance usage on a ship by ship basis, this also allowed role loadouts to a degree too as the additional weapon slots allowed a few weapon groups meant for engaging specific targets.

X4 has weapon groups but other than the launchers theres not much point so far as the few weapons available now lack considerable differences in range etc.

The new turrets are just awful, at least on the M class ships. The range on them is pathetic meaning the fighters can safely volley you and zoom by and the turrets get a few shots and then have to slowly track to the other side, worse the turrets stop tracking an enemy that leaves thier range, rather than track the target until its in range then fire it has to completey re-aim with every pass.

I havent tried missiles yet as they no longer have an integrated launcher and I dont think I can trust my ai captains to manage a limited ammo pool well.

My god if this game had elite dangerous cockpits. combat, and special effects and sound effects. It would eliminate my need for ED entirely.
