Look for a flashing lock icon, when you do shoot it lightly and the box should open releasing the wares for you to run over to collect, or press O to use the Cargo collector.
"Hmm, not even a starter pulse laser is safe enough to shoot the EIGHT LOCKS on this wildly spiraling container without breaking it. Good thing I bought a space suit laser!... Oh, it doesn't work." (It will take 1% off the hull health if I hit the crate, but locks? Nope! dozens of blasts do nothing)
What then, is the point of the space suit laser (not the repair beam), while I'm wondering? Do I need to find a shop selling an old fashioned crowbar if I want to disable spinning crates covered in a more locks than a bank safely?

EDIT: IT WAS FULL OF MINES. Who does that?
Powered my murphys law of internet complaints (I realized the repair beam worked on the crate. so just repair it if I hit it with my ship guns!... oh, 8 perfect shots) I cracked it open, and freaking MINES flew out of the loot box.
Mines I was not allowed to target (they were not flagged as hostile because???). So one hit me, and I slammed full reveres, popped open my map (I turned off speed loss on menu for a reason) to target via the map so I could shoot down the other mine.
The space dust settles, my little starter Vanguard is down to 73% hull instead of scrap. and I say to myself.
"Still not as annoying as the fact the suit laser can't bust locks"
Eventually it unlocks to empty its contents.
However as ImHelping stated, I was dismayed to find it not only had a bunch of REALLY good things in it, it had a bunch of mines! I managed to make it back to my ship which had heavy enough shields to withstand the explosion when the drifting container eventually hit the mines... however none of the loot survived.
