Needed version that doesn't use vulkan.
I wanted to try X4, but according to the specs my GFX has to support vulkan, but it doesn't, it's only DX and OpenGL, even though the PC is not a dedicated gamers PC, but a medium to high end system, and is capable of playing most of the single player games such as Osiris, No Man's Sky, Sky Break, Planet Nomads, Planet Explorers, Subnautica, and many others like them without needing Vulkan.

Is there a version of X4 that can run without needing Vulkan? Either OpenGL or DX9/11

Vulkan is a requirement for the game. The engine uses it as the primary rendering platform.

If your GPU doesn't support Vulkan, it sounds like it's an older GPU, which also means it wouldn't be fast enough for the game.

What GPU do you have? Even GPU's from 2010 support Vulkan.

I doubt it. Vulkan is meant to work on all platforms (it's basically the replacement for opengl) so there's not a ton of point in splitting your development resources to also build dx support into the game.
I'm curious what gpu have? Most processors since about 2012 have had vulkan support except for intel graphics which took until 2015 so it probably wouldn't support this game anyway.

I know it's not the answer you're looking for but if you're running a gpu that doesn't support vulkan it's old enough/low powered enough that you should consider an upgrade anyway - a card that does support vulkan can be had new for about $100.

First things first, what's the graphics hardware you're using?

Let's be sure you have a card that can't support Vulkan, for all we know at this point it can.

Ok, I checked with AMD and they said the Radeon 6530HD does not have the architecture needed for Vulkan, which means I guess I'll have to give this game a miss and put the spending down to experience.

I'm not going to go out and spend thousands of dollars just to get a system that can run X4, I'm not a hard core gamer, and only play games I like, so I don't really need a system that takes mega watts of power and runs supersonic speeds with memory that would put all the NASA's computers to shame, but, anyway, thanks for everyone's help.

Then may I recommend one of the X2/X3 games if you want the X-universe experience, plus, plenty of mods available for them.

Unfotunate, but to each their own. Typically gaming requires you keep up with hardware replacements at least once each 3-5 or so years with all components. That GPU was introduced in December of 2010 - eight years ago.

That card (Radeon 6530HD) is way, way, way below minimum requirements for X4, with or without Vulkan support.

Can`t disagree with this. You have to upgrade at least within the same decade and it`s not hard or expensive as long as you do it a bit at a time.

Fair enough.

If you are looking for an involved space game where you get to fly, you will not do better than getting x3 Terran Conflict/Albion Prelude which should run fine on your machine, and ieaxh s an older but more feature complete version of what this offers anyway, without some of the nice but admittedly frivolous features like station walking. TC/AP I was still playing when this game came out, they are good value even if the initial learning curve is brutal. You have to use mods for cockpits in those games if you want them, you can find them on the egosoft forums and they do still work.

Well that`s what I call hyperbole for sure. It`s nothing like as expensive as that, especially if all you need is a graphics card change. It doesn`t matter if you`re a hard core gamer or not. If you want to play the latest games of 2018, you gotta expect you might have problems when using a pc nearly a decade old!

You can`t expect to have the engine of a 1919 Model T Ford and still get it to race like a normal 21st century car years later.

I tend not to poke at someone's rationale for not upgrading as it might just be that they can't afford to spend money on any upgrade.

That said, while most of us would probably be buying say a 1080ti for this, and those can get really expensive at the moment, one of the better built (better cooled) 1050tis will run this with frame rates as decent as you need/can expect from this game, and those are very reasonably priced by comparison, perhaps within more people's reach for a casual upgrade. I verified this with an asus "gaming" card. So don't know if that helps, OP.

The game is hardly demanding. I run it fine on a GTX 760 which is nowhere near the requirements. You basically need a GPU which is intended for any sort of gaming (even budget) that supports Vulkan.
YoLolo69 Jan 25, 2019 @ 4:51am
3GB VRam for the GPU is the minimum required for X4 AFAIK. Less and you're on your own and can't complain it will not work stable and fine...

Got a cyberpower from Walmart, i7 16GB, 1060 6GB, 240 GB SSD + 1 TB HD.. For $1099...
My sys was 5 years old or so, so it was time anyway and this was just the kick in the pants😁
