I liked highways and I'm thrilled they're back in. It adds a way of both expanding the amount of space in the game and bringing things closer together.
The only thing I don't like from XR in terms of travel was pathing, specifically in HoP, Tor, and CS where capships had to hug connected sectors to get to where they were going.
To me it defeated the purpose of having a massive engine booster if you still stuck to populated space
You did, however I believe I remember reading or hearing that jump drives will no longer be in the game, which means no more jump beacons as well.
I believe capships get their own special highway. I might be wrong though. Been awhile since I read into it
Don't forget these two music tracks from XR xD

I expect more highway music for X4.
Id guess Cap ships M1 M2 etc use the jumpgates.
This is some kind of blank wall, which was erected by the developers, and players are beating into it. But all is useless.
Thank God that there was a mod in Rebirth that cleaned these guts.
I hope that in X4 there will be the same mod for the removal of guts from the game
But with X4 Map being so good I think highways will not be such a bothersome. I think getting to point a to point b will feel a little nicer.
All you had to do was disrupt the power to a small section of the highway system, dropping everything travelling in it to sub light speed (which is normal speed) for about a minute before the disabled section repowered.
Im really hoping this highway system does not make the game too much of a yawnfest while travelling-Meaning less hostile encounters from the Xenon or pirate factions.
1:Shipping Lanes/Sea Lanes. It's very much a thing, granted without buoys. Space in XR/X4 isn't treated like an ocean, either. Rather, it's treated like townships along an interstate highway. You COULD just drive across hundreds of miles of desert or miscellaneous terrain, but you would have to do so at a fraction of the speed and if you get stranded you're gonna be SOL.
The only thing where you're making sense is Torride parts of HoL, in which it is faster to fly in a straight line from a->b, as opposed to following a series of sectors. It'll take you through completely empty space, but it's faster.
2: Elite's travel system isn't compatible with X, at all. The closest thing we're gonna get to it is "Travel Drive," which is likely going to be a sustained faster-than-boost speed. ED's scale doesn't compare to that of the X series.
A shipping lane is hundreds or thousands of nautical miles wide ( 1 NM=2000 yds) using no buoys. Buoys mark traverse areas of dredged channels safe for deep draft vessels to safely enter and exit ports or areas of restricted maneuverability. The color of the buoy denotes how to enter the channel. ie: red, right, returning. Our oceans are massive. Spending 14 of 20 years of my life at sea in the navy, I would consider myself an expert in this field. Since our oceans are massive, outer space is eternal. That's why I was saying that it just seems a little weird to have highways in such an open environment.
I think its because in X3 it was easily exploitable and made gates pointless mid to late game, unless you were jumping to terran territory or albion sectors. As you could fit them on every ship in your fleets. With that and the satellite network you could set up,made it easy to know where to jump.Of course this is just my own opinion on why they removed it.
Theres a discussion on it here which might shed more light on the subject of why~> https://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?f=146&t=400527
