Why highways?
So many people have voiced their dislike for the highway system, and one of the reasons that Rebirth was so bad.

I liked highways and I'm thrilled they're back in. It adds a way of both expanding the amount of space in the game and bringing things closer together.

The only thing I don't like from XR in terms of travel was pathing, specifically in HoP, Tor, and CS where capships had to hug connected sectors to get to where they were going.

To me it defeated the purpose of having a massive engine booster if you still stuck to populated space

You did, however I believe I remember reading or hearing that jump drives will no longer be in the game, which means no more jump beacons as well.

I believe capships get their own special highway. I might be wrong though. Been awhile since I read into it

I think Capships actually just get unlimited boost.

i saw the distinctive rings of jump gates and those triangular shaped highway devices with the visible blue distortion from a number of pictures that ketraar has released on the official screenshot thread. so those will most certain be in this game.

Don't forget these two music tracks from XR xD

I expect more highway music for X4.

Could never share the general dislike of the highways. Just those in those idiotic systems where they had been mindlessly drawn zig-zagging all over the system by their apprentice or cleaning woman... Those systems had been (and still are) truely awful.

To quote someone: To move across sectors there are the Jumpgates. To move fast inside a zone there are the highways.
Id guess Cap ships M1 M2 etc use the jumpgates.

I like the idea of highways IF they let us do this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m38QcCyo110

Am I going to have to dodge more stupid ships just to get where I want to in a timely manner? Can't I just float along with the rest of highway traffic without "anyone" bumping into me?

This thing surprises me too. And its very sad.

This is some kind of blank wall, which was erected by the developers, and players are beating into it. But all is useless.

Thank God that there was a mod in Rebirth that cleaned these guts.

I hope that in X4 there will be the same mod for the removal of guts from the game
Highways by the end of X Rebirth were pretty much no worries just fly and never get knocked out as much. Highways I think in my books outside being knocked out were more confusing because of how the map was designed in the game. I felt like I had no clue where I was going besides following auto pilot. Made the game feel so liner at first.

But with X4 Map being so good I think highways will not be such a bothersome. I think getting to point a to point b will feel a little nicer.

Im probably beating a dead horse saying this but freelancer had the best gate / highway system ive ever seen in a game to date. It was easy to see where you were going and also allowed for hijinks for the pirates,as you generally couldnt shoot while travelling in the gate system and there was no bumping ships out of it.

All you had to do was disrupt the power to a small section of the highway system, dropping everything travelling in it to sub light speed (which is normal speed) for about a minute before the disabled section repowered.
Im really hoping this highway system does not make the game too much of a yawnfest while travelling-Meaning less hostile encounters from the Xenon or pirate factions.

Highways are kinda dumb. Imagine a "road system" of buoys in the middle of the ocean for ships to travel on. I think Elite Dangerous has the best ways to travel: Battle speed / System speed (moving fast within a system / Jump speed (jumping to another system.

1:Shipping Lanes/Sea Lanes. It's very much a thing, granted without buoys. Space in XR/X4 isn't treated like an ocean, either. Rather, it's treated like townships along an interstate highway. You COULD just drive across hundreds of miles of desert or miscellaneous terrain, but you would have to do so at a fraction of the speed and if you get stranded you're gonna be SOL.

The only thing where you're making sense is Torride parts of HoL, in which it is faster to fly in a straight line from a->b, as opposed to following a series of sectors. It'll take you through completely empty space, but it's faster.

2: Elite's travel system isn't compatible with X, at all. The closest thing we're gonna get to it is "Travel Drive," which is likely going to be a sustained faster-than-boost speed. ED's scale doesn't compare to that of the X series.

A shipping lane is hundreds or thousands of nautical miles wide ( 1 NM=2000 yds) using no buoys. Buoys mark traverse areas of dredged channels safe for deep draft vessels to safely enter and exit ports or areas of restricted maneuverability. The color of the buoy denotes how to enter the channel. ie: red, right, returning. Our oceans are massive. Spending 14 of 20 years of my life at sea in the navy, I would consider myself an expert in this field. Since our oceans are massive, outer space is eternal. That's why I was saying that it just seems a little weird to have highways in such an open environment.

In X4 theres no ship fitted standalone jumpdrive unlike X3/elite and instead ships have to rely on something to propel them across vast areas of space hence gates and highways.

I think its because in X3 it was easily exploitable and made gates pointless mid to late game, unless you were jumping to terran territory or albion sectors. As you could fit them on every ship in your fleets. With that and the satellite network you could set up,made it easy to know where to jump.Of course this is just my own opinion on why they removed it.
Theres a discussion on it here which might shed more light on the subject of why~> https://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?f=146&t=400527
