Modern Freelancer with friends alternative available? (coop/MP)
I miss Freelancer. It was a totally new and huge experience back in the day. Being able to play with a friend was awesome. Okay if I remember correct, you missed out on the story missions but trading, exploring, bounty hunting was there.

To this day I haven't found a worthy successor with coop.

EVE - Played for a year or two, ten years ago. Required a massive amount of time and had a very steep learning curve. Couldn't get any friends to play because of the monthly subscription.
Yes it has some kind of F2P system now a days but you will be seriously restricted to what you can learn/fly

Entropy - Looked promising with similar trading and mining as EVE but it was a too ambitious project for the small team

Black prophecy - Tried the beta but the controls were horrible and eventually they went bankrupt

Space Engineers - Very nice with coop but lacks "proper" PVE, trading, NPC stations, star systems/sectors. Also it's mainly focused on engineering which doesn't suit everyone

Elite Dangerous - Played at the launch but couldn't get into it. Great simulation and fun fights but seemed to lack a lot. Very small scale trading. Can you even get a huge freighter or is ot mainly about fighters?

----OFF TOPIC----
After EVE i discovered X3:R and had lot's a great time with it (sector/star system traders). But years later when I bought X3:AP I couldn't get into it because of the terribly clunky UI and extremely tedious menus. Yes it probably had improved a bit from X3:R but not enough.
So I'm looking forward to X4:F with it's graphical trading system

Sadly these games are not coop. But hey! Let's not start a discussion abou that. There's another thread for that =)

EVERSPACE - Would be avesome with coop!!

Starpoint Gemini Warlords - Could be nice with coop

SPAZ 2 - Wasn't this supposed to be coop?

Which games have I missed and are there any to look out for?

No Man's Sky, Spacebourne, Genesis Alpha One, Between the Stars, Rebel Galaxy Outlaw. Probably 2 or 3 others I am forgetting right now.

No man's sky - Ah yeah they added coop to that one. Didn't know it had trading and fighting. Guess I should put it on the try out list. A bit pricy though. Steam's 2h refund limit may not give the best experience. But I should check out some gameplay.

Spacebourne - Never actually heard of... Oh =( doesn't seem to be coop/MP

Genesis Alpha One - Also new for me and also lacks coop/MP

Between the Stars - Wow nice visals! Will try out the demo. But sadly SP

Rebel Galaxy Outlaw - Yeah have stumbled upon this before but turned me off when it was 2.5D and only SP

Thanks for the tips though. Will check out some NMS, SB and BtS gameplay videos

i played freelancer last year, on the discovery mod and server, it gave back some of what i missed from Freelancer back in the day on the Jolt server. there might still be some hope for freelancer MP.
X3:AP is the best X, with XRM then, you have the most complex space game that has been made.

But, about Freelancer... Here go what you're looking for:

Elite does have cargo ships. It's actually pretty close to what I remember of Freelancer MP in function, but not style. Basically presents you with a whole bunch of stuff to do, and no story whatsoever.

Different tempo, mechanics. practically so far apart in design that Elite has more in common with Eve Online trading than Freelancer ever has. Freelancer systems are small in scale, very few stations or contact in a lot of the systems except a lot of jump gates and trade lane rings. far easier to make money in a few hours than it would in eve and without any aggravation of gate campers since it is more regulated or people have other things to do.

Think I tried out some Freelancer mod a few years ago or maybe just watched some gameplay videos. I'm looking for a modern alternative since Freelancer still with mods have very low poly models and a UI not meant for high dpi screens.

If Elite would be more arcadish and have not as steep learning curve then maybe it would be the game for us.

Avorion seem to have gotten a nice rating but reading the reviews I'm getting sceptical. Plus I don't like the visuals.

Skywanderers looks awesome and have an even more advanced building mechanic than Space engineers and Empyrion. But it's in a very early stage and like with the two others, it will probably mainly focus on building.

Infinity seemed promising 8 years ago. But it was purely a tech demo though. Then it went silent. Now it seems like they scrapped the MMO idea and got fundings for a scaled down pvp game through Kickstarter

Empyrion Galactic Survival gets you a sorta Space Engineers game(better IMO) but with NPC ships, stations, ground bases.

As for Freelancer succesor, still haven't found one. I miss you Eagle Squadron server and /v/lancers... golden years for space shooters we may never see again.

No, most don't have coop. Having a good space RPG with coop is actually pretty hard to do.

MMO's side skirt it but most of them are crap or incomplete right now.

Interstellar Rift, but its very rough around the edges.
Pulsar Lost Colony, not very wide but already a very solid coop eperience.
Xorloth Oct 8, 2018 @ 3:29am
Hahha, I had put both of them on the ignore list. The top/first negative review on IR scared me away when it said there aren't NPCs. Need to check out some gameplay. Looks interesting.

Pulsar may not be as big as IR but got many very positive reviews regarding the coop.

Thanks for mentioning these!
