I tend to play more of a trading game, thus much of the time is spent managing stuff.
MFG

And considering UI shown you will need mouse or keyboard for the UI managing (so no couching anyway). It looks much heavier then Elite's and Elite already is pain to control with joystick (let alone gamepad).
So the only question is what do you want to fly with. Mouse/Joystick should be both viable. Flight control is not too complex.
most fun? HOTAS / Dual JoyStick / JoyStick + Keyboard
for the lolz: racing wheel
forget gamepads. you will have to reach out for your keyboard due to lack of buttons. hotas are fine, you can map ctrl, alt and shift to double and tripple map buttons.
Dual joystick and throttle when flying fighters. K+M when flying capital ships.
Imagine playing it on a 32:9 monitor. Geezz... time to stop daydreaming
As long as the walking bits are interesting or optional any method that you want to use should provide a seamless experience, however it's unlikely a controller will be able to provide full access unless they bring up an action wheel of some description.
Getting UI right for all control methods is difficult.
have a new 4k display with 49 inch (not sure if its the right word, translator gave it to me XD) and would be great to play on it.
Now it's either in the box of cables and other electrical detritus or it's in an unrelated product box in a cupboard.
I hope this jogs your memory. Worse case it ended up in the vacuum :(
