Egosoft has produced such amazing games but it takes them 3 DLC to get it right - since they obviously have a problem as a game company with figuring out which features to include, we have to as a community resolve to chill out on these fringe features until we have a fully functional game where you don't end up inside a freighter and have to restart because you stopped just inside a hyperlane and it rammed you from behind and clipped you inside its model. For god's sake we don't even have a LEDGER in an economic builder sim!
You are correct they make amazing games and i have enjoyed them all for thousands of hours.
This is an immersion problem that is some what unique to this title.
Would not have to complicated at this stage. A simple system using the assets they have already made, there are many different people models already in game, there is a ship skin customisation option.
How about just a blanket option to make all crew be in flight suits with a pilot having a helmet.
I think the weird crew compositions is more immersion breaking than having prettier explosions, which were already wonderful, in terms of gaming quality.

By the way you can just teleport OOS to fix this, you don't have to restart.
The appearance and voice of ships's crew you'll got throughout the game.
If you just start game, make some trade-fights then close and remove - crews's appearance doesn't matter. If you want to play more - you'd like to see faces and listen voices you prefer.
As a player who has long played through all the storylines many times, at the endgame I spend months choosing crews with needed appearance for my faction either by walking at stations or buying and selling ships insted expanding the empire, trading and fighting. Or switches back to the X3 series (thanks devs to Farnham's Legacy).
Without the ability to simply choose or change crew's appearance the space sandbox X4 turns into a walking at stations sim while long time playing.
