btw the Ody works great with all Bolters and just your main battery. You can basically sit and take all the fighters and your main battery is actually usable against most fighters. With a Gorgon on its back very little can hurt you.
Did you manage to claim the Ody with all its weapons and shields? If not I hope you still have a save game as it is actually very possible, so long as you have at least 1 EMP bomb
Missiles are sold at shipyard and equipment dock as consumables, and turret behavior can be set in ship information.
Its true you can select missile type with rack launchers on S and M ships, but turrets don't have that option. They work anyway, however.
In theory the game should select the best missile type according to the situation, but in practice it simply uses the highest damage missile type available regardless.
If your turrets are set to Defend, they'll fire volley's of missiles at anything that fires on you first. If you set it to Attack All Enemies they'll lob missiles at anything that gets in range.
And yes, is normal that on L ships there are no icons. You can control the behavior by tapping Enter and then us the option there, or you can go to the Map view and then the Information panel for your ship and set it from there.
A single hotkey to rotate though turret behavior would be a good start. Independent hotkeys for Defend, Attack My Current Target, Attack All Enemies would be most appreciated. EDIT: Also a Hold Fire or Off option.
I realize a capital ship supposedly has separate stations the captain is issuing orders to... but the ship AI tends to do things even when we don't want it to. For instance.. I don't want the turrets to be on attack all enemies if I'm flying near allied stations. When an enemy ship passes between my cap and an allied station, the slow projectile plasma turrets tend to spray that station trying to hit that enemy target. I would like to be able to "issue" fire/no fire/type of fire behavior orders on the fly without resorting to any menus.
all within the reasonable amount of 10-15 seconds... if you have good reflexes even faster.
If you don't mind using a mod...

Requirement notification should pop up, but you also need https://www.nexusmods.com/x4foundations/mods/322
You can change turret behavior for your own ship as well as multiple ships selected on the map using the right-click menu.
It would really help if EgoSoft would just take this and implement it in the base game...
eg. I have a Logitech G910 keyboard and using the software could easily install one of 9 keys to mimic my opening the menus and selecting a given option. With 2 key presses I can choose from 27 keys. Or I could opt to use the similar software on my mouse and have a single key press or sequence to mimic the same menu choices. Even my Joystick an ancient beast has similar options for its dozen or so buttons.
Now if only my memory for keys was good enough I would use that software :D
With the Logitech software you can include a mimic feature that copies your key presses into a timed memory or you can manually set timings and maker toggles out of buttons that would normally be press to run ie I programmed a single key to toggle the 'O' so that I can free up one finger when collecting loot. I could also program a key to set scan mode and even get the timing right for pressing 'R' so that such scans were always timed correctly.
Logitech is not the only company offering such software, although imho theirs is much easier than some others I have used.
As I am heavily dependant upon my mouse rather than keyboard I do tend to use this feature once I have learned which key sequences are most nuisance to me. I struggle to remember sequences and rely heavily upon the visual queues of using the actual menu :( So I do try to only use such software for only those most nuisance sequences.
EDIT: Another benefit of such software is that it does not *Modify* your game so achievements can still be earned :D
don't forget about Ventures.
