Super Highways
I very much enjoyed X3 Terran Conflict and the variety it offered in the way of different ships, items, and races. I also very much enjoyed the exploration and seeing my ship hurdle through a jump gate was so wonderful that i really did feel as though i was getting somewhere. I do not like the super highway concept at all unfortunately. A super highway reminds me of something like a current in an ocean or river that would be great for a submarine to enter and increase my speed. The subject is space though and having a current in space is something i try hard to imagine, but it just doesnt work for me. I am so very much wanting to get X4: Foundations, but the super highways make it to where i might make myself not get it. I really dont feel as though there is a need for the fantasy type of super highway because i feel that everything was done right before. Before there had been slower ships that were realistic and for a patient player it was enjoyable. Sometimes it is nice to have increased speed, but that is when i would switch over to other ships with the fast speeds. I just cant understand the reason for a super highway unless it is something on a planet where no speed restrictions might be a plus. I wish that all X people could vote on the Super Highway subject. I just feel that Jump Gates are adequate and if you want faster speeds than get a faster ship, like maybe a class 'S' - ship... a Super Ship........

To be fair I dont think will be long untill these three things happen -> Auto scanner more in tune with x3 scanner =], Two highways/superways removed and replaced with gates, and also no rent costs, Which would be the three mods I would/will use when they come out =]

Concept of highways is just weird. I very much agree with others when I jump into a sector I dont want to be funnled into this tube. I want to be IN the sector. Fast travel is what the gates are for, or SETA.

Those highways are just ugly as hell and no fun at all. If I wanted to travel in a tube, I would play a train simulator or some other such nonsense. If this is just going to be a repeat of the mistakes made in Rebirth, then count me out.

yea its starting to sound like its not X4 but rebirth 2 because of all of these rebirth so called improvements and im yet to see much in the way of X4 design focus , for now atleast on the upside my hopes are low so no investment in the progress ATM :}

How were the highways used in home of light? its been 4ever since i played XRebirth and i dont think i ever got over to home of light.

In Home of Light the highways are broken up into 8 sections in a circle, 4 regular highways and 4 superhighways. You can hop into any of the four regular highways and it will carry you throug the zones in that sector, and if you don't get out push you straight into a superhighway, which will drop you into another highway.

This pattern repeats until you are where you started from, and loops. So you could ride the highways forever.

Now in X4 they might not follow that pattern exactly. But they'll be more logical has a highway rather then random strings leading places like they were in Albion, Devries, and Omicron Lyrae.

For those of you who were disappointed with X Rebirth and its 'let's stoop to the console crowd' antics, you've got to check out this mod in the X:R Workshop - "NEW X Rebirth 100%Free-Space". It removes the joke space highways discussed here and gives you the experience you were craving from the start - open, vast, explorable SPACE. All the best, enjoy!

hi i loved all the x3 games but i didt like xrebirth for the highways and being only one ship i see they have changed the 1 ship and can go in any ship how do the highways work cos must admit didt give rebirth much of a go and i so the add on steam and it looked like there was a gate in the back ground are they haven them as well
CTHOMP Feb 10, 2018 @ 3:11pm
From the information provided, x4 is looking more like rebirth than x3. For what it's worth. They are apparently reducing the highways somewhat.

ya scrap the highways already

I like the highways more then SETA, seta is just a fast forward button, its stupid. really a deal breaker when i want to play X3 , without seta even my ford mondeo is faster

I've been playing these games since the original. I have my original copies, i have them on steam and i got the superbox just for the sake of having it in my collection at home as i love them so much. X Rebirth for me, was unbareable. 1 ship (say no more), super highways (annoyed the hell outta me) and walking around stations just felt like filler that got boring after the first time doing it.
No matter how many updates, these 3 were more than enough to keep me from playing it, as they were never going to be taken out, only adjusted/updated.

They say this is a sequal to X3, not Rebirth, yet out of the 3 most annoying things for me, 2 are going to be carried over to X4. They got me like so many others, it was my love for the x series that made me buy rebirth without waiting for reviews, but not again. I would love to see a true x3 sequal done right, but it's not looking good at all thus far. This time i'm going to wait and see what they do before buying.

It hurts to be wary of a series that i have had so many years of fun out of, but all good things come to an end, and I hate to say it, but I do think Rebirth was the end for x series for me. If this turns out to be Rebirth 2, I'm done :(

Based on recent comments, it looks like some sectors will have local highways, but "Super Highways" (those that connect different sectors) are replaced with Orbital Accelerators. I personally prefer Super Highways over OA, but they pretty much are the same thing anyway, so whatever.

Again, this isn't confirmed, just based on some comments on the official forum.
CTHOMP May 29, 2018 @ 6:34am
Except orbital accelerators and gates dont create ugly "tubes" all over the place.
Ketraar May 29, 2018 @ 7:10am
Well ugly is a matter of taste, but what gates do is to remove "space" from the game. Meaning that Superhighways got me the impression of moving between physical locations and gave a sense of scale, where a gate just "plops" you somewhere that can be far away or just next door, but you wouldnt know.

I'm not the biggest fan of highways, but the Superhighways are great in XR and I much prefer them over the accelerator in the form of gate. If its something like a slingshot, where ships get accelerated from one point to the next, but I can SEE that transition I can live with it, but I cant stress enough how important it is to witness the the space between zones.

I'm fine for "normal" Gates to work as they do for interstellar travel.

MFG
