One of the buttons will be to "transition to full service" or something like that.

yeah but when I input my product key it says that since I didn't purchase it from steam it won't let me transfer services.

The subscription works regardless of where you get the client, because the subscription is based on your Mog Station account. You can still play the game, but you can't play it via Steam unless you buy the client via Steam. All you lose is time tracking, really.

Wait I am currently a free trial player and I bought the game on a different site (newegg) now when I go to mogstation I type in my product key and they give me this message:
The code you have entered cannot be used with a Steam free trial account.
To complete registration using a Steam free trial acount, please purchase a copy of the Windows version via Steam or the Mog Station.

You might need contact SE how to fix this. It makes sense as Steam does not get a cut if you buy from Neweggs or even directly from SE, hence the trial code you get from Steam require you to buy a copy from Steam and not elsewhere. The alternative to this is just make a new account and restart a new character with the copy you bought from Neweggs.

Look, he got the free-trial via the Steam page. So yeah, he needs to buy it on Steam to 'transfer to regular service'. i.e. his current SE account is a 'Steam' version.

Even when I went and got the non-Steam free-trial client from SE, it won't use a non-Steam code to upgrade.

So even though I have a nonsteam version of the game now I cannot transfer my steam affiliated account. Amazing.

Welcome to the monopoly ^-^.

Still, this is a FF MMORPG. 14 days at most on that 'free-trial'? Meh. Double meh. Start over and do it faster, better, cheaper and funner. I bet you didn't even get a friendship code yet right? So you didn't lose all that much... got to keep this attitude for these kinds of games.

Also putting games on Steam means a universe of benefits for dev, publishers and players with only a small cut going to Valve so don't get too hot at Valve for wanting more icing on their cake.

I haven't experienced this personally, but I heard that it's because when you click the Mogstation link from Steam it's appending an extra parameter on the end (issteam=1 or something) and that in turn means it only accepts Steam stuff.

To fix, just instead go directly to the Mogstation:

https://secure.square-enix.com/account/app/svc/Login?cont=account&request=mogstation

(not from any link Steam gives you) I've heard it will then work as you expect, apologies if I misunderstood and this isn't the case though!

Edit: Make sure you closed all copies of your browser first though, if you had the site loaded with the "Steam" version, it'll continue to stay in "Steam mode" until fully closed!

Nope. Kinda depends on the SE account + game code. It's https so it'll tend to reload/reset most web settings. You can also use http://sqex.to/MSP that's the official redirect URL.

See, if you use the Steam demo to create a SE account... the free trial game service is added as a 'Steam' version

SE account -> game service (can be Steam or non-Steam)

If you use a game code you get from Steam? Then it's a 'Steam' game. Use a game code from Walmart, it's a non-Steam game.

Well, assuming you get a game code from Steam, then using it at the Mogstation... you can then uninstall Steam and forget about it.

Use whatever non-Steam client (say directly from SE) and just play the game/etc. The only difference compared to just buying a non-Steam game is that the option to pay via Crysta (SE's in/out game currency) is replaced with the Steam Wallet option. That and you lose all the Steam-related tracking/etc.
