Should I return now or next year?

Lately I've been tempted to start playing again, I still have some MSQ to do but it has been such a while that I'd have to learn the gameplay again, I'm wondering if I should return now or just wait for the next expansion next year, I think there was something about combat changes and how the daily/weekly stuff works etc?

not now, probably wait for next expansion, next expansion is updating the gameplay mechanics too. but u have to weight how do u value the time now before next expansion is out. If u want to play the game till the latest progression before next expansion, probably now.

If you want to do chaotic raids, FT:B, OC, the last savage tier and ultimate(s) then you have some okay reasons for returning. Thankfully this expansion wasn't the snoozefest that was Endwalker with it's content draught.

I'm glad that Path of Exile 2 is launching in december, that'll be good timesink for that month

Really depends on you. the battle content in this expansion was actually great for all levels of play. the post DT MSQ has greatly improved (7.4-7.56 the most)

The actual combat changes and how gear progression is something that will ship only with Evercold in Jan 2027
But if you decide to play now then it's still the typical tomes of usual

If you have already the itch to play and you already have bought Dawntrail before then I don't see why not to get a sub for a month or so to do the content you might be interested in.

gameplay isnt hard to re-learn, and if you wanna do story it doesnt matter when you return

Wait for Evercold, play the... er... Evolution? I think the devs have in mind free choice of MSQ chapters, meaning one could hop directly into last chapter and never touch the controversial DT, if that's your choice. Need confirmation on that of course, it was just a rumor when I heard of it.

Even if you capitalize on what's left of Beastmaster's get rich quick gig with that stupid haircut, AND getting that Halloween costume right now, it's not exactly worth it to get back into Dawntrail at all.

I'd also wait and see about Evercold. I know I'll be biting the bullet day 1. For possibly the last time. I just know those devs are getting set to pull the wool over us.

I would say Dynasty Warriors 9 but that would suggest they tried AND replace all of the VAs.

new content which you cannot play because you are not far enough in the story. And the evolved mode is just a nice gimmick. You can play with it but dont be forced to do it.

afaik its literally same just less buttons on your hotbar (which is easier by default than current system). And combat/rotations itself are easy, so i dont see an issue in "learning" reborn" first

The question also is how far OP is into the MSQ.
If they don't even have Dawntrail yet then waiting for Evercold is the better financial option.
If they wanna be caught up to be ready to play Evercold when it's out then yeah it's probably worth considering.
If they're pretty deep into post-DT then it really dephends on if they wanna scratch the itch and if they care enough about the events/collabs going on right now and otherwise waiting is still an option.

Evercold is in about 3 months after which gearing for level 100 will become significantly easier and a bunch of major changes (at least in jobs, between evolved mode and the usual reworks) will happen, make of that how you will.
