Would only serve to increase sales.
Also, updates don't need to be pushed through Steam. Any active player of the game knows when patches are upcoming, and would launch the client anyway.
If one purchases FFXIV directly through Square Enix, then Achievements are available and viewable in-game through the Lodestone. If one prefers the PS3, then FFXIV already supports Trophy integration for the PS3. If one prefers Steam, and purchases FFXIV through Steam, then integration for Steam Achievements should be accomodated. PC Players who feel "left out" as a result of the presence of Steam Achievements would only be left out as per their own choosing, as they can simply elect to use Steam if they desire the ability to obtain Steam Achievements.
Purchasing the game directly through Square Enix yields merely the standard in-game achievement support, while purchasing the game on the PS3 yields the option to obtain Playstation Trophies; if the player wants Playstation Trophies, then he is not barred from purchasing FFXIV on the PS3, as it is an option for him. It would be a similar scenario if FFXIV developers were to offer Steam Achievement integration; players are not "left out" as a result of this option, as Steam is free to download, and if, for whatever reason, a given player does not like Steam, then he has no valid reason to feel left out, nor a reason to care whether Steam Achievements are supported.
As a final point, since Steam is a free platform to obtain, it's easy to see that there is less of a chance of any "left out" feeling to occur among the consumer base. Most people own a computer even if it's just for daily activities, but it's likely that less players own a console. The true sense of being "left out," then, should more reasonably come from the idea that PS3 players have their platform achievement-accomodated while there is no such accomodation afforded to PC players who use Steam, which is one of the most popular PC gaming services that allows for such an accomodation to occur.
It is not as if PS3,PC, and Steam are names of different countries, with each "country" receiving its own set of features. The option to purchase and play FFXIV on any of these platforms is available to any player; therefore it does not make sense to impose limitations on services and support rendered for the sake of preventing any sort of feeling of a consumer being "left out."
So... when we see something that really doesn't take a lot of effort like that... we can start wondering about Steam Integration.
P2P MMORPGs don't care about those stuff on Steam, since Steam sale equals percentage cut from their profit. Ever wonder why WoW isn't on Steam? Cause Blizzard don't want, don't care, don't need to split profit with Steam. Generally if they are P2P MMO they are successful enough to afford to do so because otherwise they go "Unlimited" and drop subs fee like some other games.
Ohhh I didnt look at it that way. If one game is missing a feature, ALL games should also be missing that feature. Thanks I understand now.
Idiot.
Or the other way, if one game has a feature, all games MUST have those features. Thanks I understand now.
Idiot.
Did you actually read why SE, CCP, Blizzard or EA give a *beeps* why they need Steam Achievements?
In fact, Funcom and ZeniMax Online Studio also doesn't give a *beeps* why they need Steam Achievement.
