FFXI made people leave their comfort zone in other ways such as making you actually TALK with other players to organise parties and exploration, along with some other daring design choices. But even then, "hard" would not be the word I would use.
As much as I still love this game, I advise all challenge junkies to get their fix from singleplayer and competitive games.
Stick to single player games for that. Especially the older ones.
Top-tier raid content and PvP are usually good for a challenge; but this is a general statement, since I don't have any experience with ARR's yet. But yeah; solo/group content tends to be pretty mindless. There's a reason terms like facerolling exist.
Even Heavensward right now doesn't have hard content yet. They haven't released Raid, and Ravana Ex and Bismarck Ex are more akin to Ifrit, Garuda and Titan HM when ARR was released, not the Ex version.
The mobs in HW does a lot of dmg and has a lot of hp so as a healer I'll have to do 1 at a time or kite a bit when fighting 2
Incidentally, play the game for more than two hours, it'll get tougher as it goes on.
