You basically just described so many major characters in so many MMOs.
Guild Wars 1/2 was full of character who did absolutely nothing then take praise for your actions >_>

Being secure about my own masculinity, I don't pay much mind toward whether someone else is presenting themselves in a highly feminine way. I never thought of his speech as being girly at least.
Physical appearance aside, I think he's a strong character. With the exception of some depression at the end of the 2.5 story (I'll avoid spoilers) he's easily felt like one of the most useful characters throughout. He and Tataru seem to be the most proactive helpers without even engaging in combat.

I'd take him over the other Scions any day. I don't think I could stand Minfillias presence for as long as they've had us stick with Alphinaud. He may be small and girly but it's not like he's pathetic like Hope from FFXIII or something.

There's still room to do something interesting with Alph I think though. He's young so he could still be made a fighter. Would be the most hard-hitting plot twist yet if they turned him into a Griffith/Femto-like figure from Berserk. He has a really large number of things in common with that character when you think about it.

I'm a bit annoyed that he was as much as an idiot as he was despite being fairly worldly. He shows being knowledgable doesn't mean wise. As far as behavior? Eh.. he gets whiny at times.

He was naive. He didn't understand certain things as well as he thought he did, which invited betrayal into the fold. Give him credit, at least he tries. He gets better in Heavensward. He's still trying to learn and stuff.

I'm more confused as to how I chaged from a small miqo'te, into an au ra of average height, and no one seems to notice :)
(I know it's coded into the game, it just makes me giggle when I change my character and everything goes on as normal)

also, Y'shtola FTW, saved my character's life more times than I can remember :)
