So I used to live in the USA when I first started playing FFXIV.

I moved back home to South East Asia and... Dawntrail isn't available for purchase here. Since this is a steam account, I can't migrate to Windows version.

I guess I have to start over on a Non-Steam windows version...

it's really dumb because I can buy stuff from the mogstation and even renew my sub from there, but I'm just SOL when I want to buy the expansion

You could try to get a friend to gift you the expansion. I'm not 100% sure if it will work, but its worth a try.

My friend and I did try that but you cannot gift games not available in the recipient's region.

Tried using a VPN to switch regions but the payment method must match the region when you're in checkout and I love my friends but asking for their credit card or paypal credentials is some shady thing to do to your buddy.

So I'm just going to start over on a Windows version since you can still pay with a different region credit card on the Square Enix store on the NA Mogstation.

It's really confusing.

I'm kinda confused tho. Why is FFXIV available for SEA, but not Dawntrail?

Why is FFXIV available for SEA

it IS not
and if you have a PS5, you can just add that version to your service account and continue playing from there
or...... a MAC.
or an XBox

Well you learned your lesson. Always go with Windows version over steam. I tell this to everyone before they try the game.

I've also tried to gift a friend the base game of FFXIV, who lives in EU, and even that can't be done due to region differences (it thinks I'm gifting him the NA version when he should be getting the EU version). He did end up getting the game, of course. The same most likely applies to expansions.

Tried that already, but without a valid form of payment from the region you're using the VPN in, you can't buy anything. This also applies to PayPal as well.

You cannot use steam wallet either. You cannot add currency not native to your region and the only way to change steam region is to make a valid purchase in a different region.

But isn't Steam superior since you can use the wallet to buy sub even if ffxiv isn't available to you?

It didn't. Steam doesn't change your store region UNTIL you purchase something from the region and you can't buy something unless you have a valid payment method of THAT region.

Paypal does not circumvent this

You cannot gift products if the recipient's region does not offer that product
