Why buy a house if you can just have an apartment for about 1/10th the price?

On my server at least, a small house costs about 10x the amount of an apartment.

Why would anyone buy a house given this? Do apartments have any downsides?

I mean, apartments don't even have an auto demolition if you ever decide to take a break from the game.

You can't properly garden with an apartment for one.
You can't cross breed plants with just the pots you can place inside.

Also, Houses come in larger sizes than apartments.

Housing in FFXIV is only for the very rich usually and as someone else said, it's really just to flex. They really don't have much functional use (especially just a personal house) and the big instanced wards are usually quite dead and devoid of life. Just grab an apartment and have some fun decorating it for a bit and then forget it exists.
