FINAL FANTASY XIV Online

Best Class For Beginners?
My first character was a Thaumaturge because I wanted to be a badass dark mage. I almost stopped playing the game 2 hours in at level 3. The intro quests were in a town and so freaking boring. I thought I would start the game in a more dark and sinister area considering the class description, but it was the most clean and proper looking town. The starting environment for the mage left a bad taste in my mouth.

Then I made an archer and it was a different experience. The environment is nice and not the slow, boring town square.

What classes are recommended for beginners? Which should be avoided? (thaumaturge, etc)

Ideally, I want to play as a class that uses the shadows or dark forces (like you know how there are the warlock, rogue and death knight classes in WoW ). Is there anything like that or all the classes neutral / vibrant for the most part?

Once you reach Heavensward content (first DLC; at about level 52) you can pick up the Dark Knight job. That class is basically a mix between a "dark mage" and big Berserk-esque weapons.

He's a high DPS tank.

The starting areas are like that on purpose pretty much; since you start out as your everyday bimbo sword-guy/spell tosser/healer etc. There will be less friendly areas later on.

Well if you are looking for the edge lord then dark knight is for you. HOWEVER, you can't use him in your class selection until you reach heaven's ward.

You shouldn't worry too much about the beginning quests. They are slow and they are boring. It does pick when you progress more into the story.

As for a recommended class. I suggest the Lancer since a lot of rookies like how cool they look. If you like fast pace action, the try pugilist. There is some humor in their story and the class is really fun

I'd pick whatever class looks genuinely interesting to you.

All classes are extremely easy to learn and work well.

I personally would say arcanist as you have your pet tanking for you especially in solo quests/duties.

Tank and healer classes are great for short dungeon queues.
Be prepared for longer dungeon queues with all DPS classes.
My main is a archer/bard@63, quite liking my paladin@35.

Here are two pretty good videos about the DRK to give you some sort of idea.

Out of the starting areas, I would consider Uldah to be the darkest with the mob of refugees and royal intrigue going on there in ARR, all of which comes to a head with 2.55

A tip of advice: the different roles have different wait time for dungeons... Tank has an instant queue, Healer has around a 5 minute queue, and DPS about a 30 minute queue for dungeons.

Pro tip: Preferred worlds give double xp all the way till level 60

Try all the starter classes. Find out which ones you enjoy playing and take them into a few dungeon queues.

For my part, I think tanks are having more fun than anyone else.

The thing about FF14 is that you can play ALL the classes with one character! I think Archer is pretty beginner friendly, and is a very mobile class.

If you're into tanks, Gladiator (later becomes Paladin) isn't too difficult to pick up as well. It could also help you ease into tanking before transitioning to Dark Knight.

Archer is fine until you get Bard. Then it ramps up into keeping dots and songs on rotations. Otherwise the most 'easy' DPS would probably be BLM, DRG. I want to say SAM and MNK too but I don't know much about them.

If I had to start all over again from your position I would probably play a Paladin. The class is in a great spot right now and the short queues and new upcoming adventurer in need bonus is too sweet to pass up.

I started to play like 12 days ago and I tried to play a lot of different classes and found myself to be a really big fan of Arcanist w/ Summoner job. Its simply amazing, damage is insane, tanking pet is EXCELLENT bonus for leveling, ability to heal yourself - just perfect for the beginner. Currently level 41 on it and can't even think about switching to other classes :)

Plus the ArCaNist class leads to two jobs, SuMmoNer and SCHolar. [you level either job, you're levelling the other as well... two for one].
