The Sad Truth about Alphys..(SPOILER ALERT!!!!)

So, I saw this on Undertale-Science on Tumblr. Thanks to them for pretty much figuring this out.

Alphys is suicidal. Without Undyne, she would have killed herself. If Mettaton dies or Undyne dies she does kill herself unless you get the near genocide ending. It’s something that a lot of players never understand despite all the dialogue and direct hints.

When you call Undyne in the dump she talks about how she first met Alphys in the dump staring silently and contemplatively into the abyss. Undyne talks to her about what’s down there, and Aphys gets to talk about all her theories, and their friendship begins. If Undyne never talked to her, she would have jumped.

She says the above dialogue during the true lab.
If you kill Mettaton and go back to her Lab, it’s closed and there is no response. She has committed suicide.

On the Mettaton neutral ending, he admits he didn’t treat Alphys very well, and when he went back to apologize and ask for her help leading the underground, but he couldn’t find her anymore.

In another neutral ending, Undyne is depressed after Alphys commits suicide and Asgore is killed. Papyrus begs you to bring her friends back from whatever you did to them. But it’s too late. Alphys is the only main character you cannot fight or kill directly (Sans being actually dead after losing the fight is debatable).

The only way to kill her is to cause her to commit suicide. It’s one of the darkest thing you can do in the game.

If Mettaton was out of batteries, he hasn't died right? Hopefully... :/ I really don't want Alphys to die like this ;-; I can't access the Lab anymore and I have to fight Asgore and Toriel doesn't appear , does this mean that I am still on the true pacifist route ?

Yes, that's completely normal.

Didnt realize that until just now. True its kind of sad and dark, but dark souls backstories are darker

There have been plenty of times while camping I was up at night just looking out into the valleys thinking about life. Alphys IS a woman of science, after all. We have no idea for certain if she was pondering garbage or pondering acting as if she was a part of that garbage that ends up down the hole.

The most we could figure is that Alphys locks herself in the True Lab to surround herself with her failures and never "burden" anyone else again. If she decides to stay in there without leaving she likely dies due to finite supplies, or does worse to herself in the meantime as is also plausible (probably more so in the given case of the death of many loved ones).

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Alphys is stable and mentally healthy, but what I am saying is, other than implied lore, we don't know for certain. Sure, driving someone to potentially kill themselves is sick in it's own right on an individual basis, but the act of committing genocide has to top the list of "The Most Sickening Things to do in Undertale".

Also, Sans does indeed "bite the dust" during Genocide. The "death" sound is played and the player DOES gain EXP.

TL;DR: Conjecture on implied lore is still conjecture, even if it's the most plausible. I learned that when I was obsessed with The Binding of Isaac.

Yeah I like Alphys and I felt bad my first playthrough when I Damaged Mettaton :(

I do think that it does suggest she was gonna jump at the garbage waterfall.

Just more that, when i read the save point text, it actually just left me.. sad... depressed almost. I would have rather never read that. Been in a depression and i have stared at kinda similair stuff that could.. kill me. So i directly felt a sad atmosphere there.

Knowing Alphys was staring there too before before meeting undyne. I can definetly imagine she was heavily considering it.

Well what else could she do to be on your side? Maybe dhe wanted to avoid you facing Asgore and thought making friends could be it even while lying. She has been lying the whole time so another lie to try to do something good. Worth the risk.

The whole underground is against humans. They have a royal guard to hunt humans if they ever come. Sentry posts. Probably from all the experiences with the past 6 humans. If you are a royal scientist people will expect you to make a weopon. In this case, she managed to make a "entertaining" suit for a ghost, lies to everyone she made something living, and mettaton is clearly succesfull. It's one of the things that isn't a failure. It was made out of friendship. Even while its not practical, she did achieve the fact that she made a body, and a new friend.

Everyone fails before succeeding. But bigger mistakes are heavier. She has big ones. Wich makes many feel pity to her.

Main reason many people dont like her is because the phone calls were kinda annoying during hotlands and core.

The monster race is obviously dieing if you can go into the capital and not get assaulted by bajilions of minions. Her big mistakes such as a vulnerable defender and inability to into determination makes her a weak royal scientist.

Majority of monsters didn't reckognized you were a human. Proven by most normal conversations in town and most of the time the other monster's assaults were not violent intended while still hurting you (Siren, vulkin). We don't even know if some are traditions or show offs (Aaron).

That she failed at her job doesn't give you the right to say nobody cares about her as a character. You basically said that when someone is a failure nobody should care when they die. That is uncalled for and insilting to say the least.

So you wanna tell me that she didn't kill herself after you killed everyone including Undyne and Mettaton but she would kill herself after you only kill Mettaton?

Well, Undyne and Mettaton aren't the only things tying her to life. Most of her stress came from the almagamates in the true lab. In the failed Genocide ending, everyone finds out, but still regard her a hero because she hid them from you.
