Not trying to spare Toriel - does it have any effect?
This is my first playthrought and I'm trying not to attack anyone, but after I tried sparing Toriel and it didn't work I loaded my last save and beat her without even trying to spare. Flowey mentioned that after the fight. Did it screw up the pacifist run?

you're asking if murdering Toriel screws up the pacifist run?

I mean... I tried talking and sparing a bunch of times during my first attempt with no effect. Am I supposed to let her attack me or something? I didn't want to google it to avoid further spoilers.

Buddy. pal.

Take it from me.

You're gonna have a bad time.

You need to spare everyone in a pacifist run.

There is a way to spare her. Flowey isn't being facetious when he asks if you "like your choice".
Yes, killing someone screws up the pacifist playthrough.
No, reloading and trying again after accidentally killing someone doesn't.

If you continue after doing this. Yes, you have screwed it up.
You can reload the save and spare her though, just looking up how to do so won't spoil anything else for the game.

I'll actually tell you how to spare her here: Just keep pressing spare. Don't give up.

Okay, thanks for advice, guys! I've restarted and this time I won't stop sparing.

Nyehehehehe.

Honestly killing her the first time and then restarting to save her is the best way to do it.

It teaches you one very important thing about this game.

The game is always watching, and it never forgets.

Sigh.. I was 8 hours into the game when I realized sparing Tauriel was actually possible, I had otherwise saved everyone, my first run. I thought flowey was lying and I misuderstood what frog said about yellow names, I thought they said it ALWAYS had to be yellow, not that sometimes I would have to spare something that wasn't yellow. and the whole game after Tauriel matched my belief (that names had to be yellow). I misunderstood because I was new to the game then. I'm sad such a big desiciosn is one of the first to occur.

Someone in the ruins says that you'll have to spare someone when their name isn't yellow. Its a small hint, and really easy to miss, but its why I found the solution first time through.

Don't ask what actions cause what. Just know this: the game tracks a whole lot and odds are it will come back later.

Just take that bit of knowledge and play the game the way you want. Don't read about it, don't try to game the system. Just go play undertale.
