androgynous or ambiguous???

um... this seems like a weird question, but dose anyone know what Frisk and Chara's cannon gender is?
I've been trying to write a fanfiction on the game, but have recently been chewed out for "Gendering" Chara and Frisk... To me, it dosn't matter either way... but what bugs me is now it seems that I am oblogated to change my story to match what this person says is the cannon gender of these characters. I've looked all over for an article about whether that was true, or if my original assumpstion, that the gender is up to the player is accurate. I've been told that Toby Fox himself said in a twitter post that they were Androgoni, but I don't know how to find that post... can someone help. this is really bothering me... If that is the cannon thing, then no problem, thats how it is... it's just bugging me, that I may end up changing something I'm writing on hear-say alone. I figured the undertale forum was the best place to get the answer.

I don't think they have "canon genders". In-game, they're both referred to with "they/them/their" pronouns.

If we were to investigate the gender of the character by going off of appearance alone (the structure of the face, hair, etc) it'd more than likely be female.

But honestly, if I were asked "are they guy or girl" and had to answer with one of the two, I'd say male. The way that Toriel treats you reminds me of the whole "Momma's boy" type of thing. Seriously, when's the last time anyone say a girl being pampered by a "Mother" in a video game. It just doesn't happen.

Some people insist it's a female. I prefer to think of them as Males. I believe they are sorta ambiguous so you can insert yourself into the game.

I see frisk as female and chara as male, but fanfiction/game wise ya its all over the place. Don't worry about what that one guy says, just go with what makes sense for your story.

They don't have a confirmed gender. It's intentional, so the player can see the character as themself, and get more easily invested in the story.

Perhaps I should clarify. The argument was about wether the character was androgynous defined as partly male and partly female in appearance; of indeterminate sex, or Ambiguous, open to more than one interpretation... Personally I think it was the latter, I just want to make sure I got it right before ticking somone off by goofing up the characters.

As long as nothing has been confirmed, they're ambiguous.

Nah, that's a lie. As far as i know, Toby hasn't said anything about the character's gender except that "it's reccomended to use your own name for the character", even more reason to believe they're ambiguous.

that makes sense... If we use our own names, then it's encouraged to be a self insert.

Frisk is a kid. All kids look androgynous. That's why there is this whole blue/pink colour coding thing going on, so that adults don't have to ask children what gender they are if they happen to forget their name. Gosh, that would be awkward.

Given that the word ambiguous kinda implies two possible genders, I'd go for indeterminate as a description.

Then write whatever you want. Frisk has absolutely zero canon personality. Technically, even their age is up to interpretation. So you can't possibly go ooc with them.
