Why do monsters attack you?

Like say, greater dog, your petting him having fun blah blah blah, but why is it made out like hes trying to kill you? You have to dodge his attacks but how are they attacks lol?

The monsters attack because..
Since you're human, they see you as a threat.
OR They want your soul so asgore can free all the monsters from the underground and blah blah.

Enemies like Greater Dog don't even know they're doing harm to your character, if you check him in battles it tells you he thinks battle is just play.

Various Reasons:

1. Compulsively Encountered for narrative reasons
2. They think you are monster as well, and or don't know they are hurting you.
3. They were hired to attack you.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS of optional lore found during the second and third regions and one minor enemy in fourth region.


1]As a human, you may be seen as a threat (after all, DUSTY tutu and DANGEROUS ballerina shoes, anyone?)
2]As you human, you are their ticket out of the Underground.
3]As a human, they could gain great power by killing you.

4]They were ordered to kill you.

5]Outside of the Ruins (which could be either due to Toriel OR as an illusion caused by a potentially unreliable narrator), minor NPCs generally don't seem to recognize that you are a human. Outside of the Royal Guard who are ordered to kill you, of course. And per Snowdin Library, monster's bullethell patterns are normally not dangerous to other monsters. So they may be Vulkin-ing things up and not realizing they are hurting/killing you.

I think the best answer is that 95% of the time they don't know that you are a human who will recieve damage from magic bullets, considering that they use them to make birthday cards and communicate (see Snowdin Librarby) Volkin thinks it is healing you, Greater dog is just playing, Froggit jumps at you and has some flies escape their mouth, the dummies bullets don't appear to be putting him at serious health risk, Papyrus, Asgore, Undyne, Toriel, Sans and maybe a few others actually are intending to hurt you and they all know you are human, think of it like that doctor who episode where there is a species of gas clouds that talk by shooting fireballs and a 600 stomached species that disembowels each other as a hello.

I think its just to make the game more fun.

Undertale would be boring if there was nothing to do in it but fight certain enemies, so I believe they added more things to fight to make it funner.
