Similarities are that they are both rpg's made by square and share the ff title.
Only you can decide which is better to you, but be warned you have invited fan boys to come calling lol

if you played FF 7 first than 8 won`t compare.
Also magazines missable, cards, GF`s, shops, items (but you can just get them from chocobo world now) also Ward is missbale in a flash back if you pick up a certain timber machanics before the flashback you may want to use a collectible or missable guide at least. (i played without one first time long story short missed many things)
You may want to play FF8 first since 7 has way more to offer.
oh also you need GF`s just to reach items in your pocket.
Also, Are you saying that 8 is shorter than 7? How about the difficulty?
Same here and i played FFVII twice before playing FFVIII.
GF's are Guardian Forces (summons) what he is reffering to is the fact that without a GF junctioned (something you'll learn if you decide on 8) your characters can't even use the item command.
Neither is shorter really, it will be down to how long you spend on certain areas, some people spend hours grinding, others never go past the opening few hours.
As for difficulty, again depends how you play. VIII can be broken early and in ways that VII can't (chocobo world+triple triad) but VII also has a few breakable points (most far later than VIII's though.)
In all you will just have to play a little of both and decide which you want to start with, you can always play both over time and form your own opinion of which is 'better' then.
FFVIII has great pre-rendered graphics and good models, a better character driven story, an amazing score, and unique systems in GFs and juctioning.
LOOK AT ME I"M TRYING TO START A WAR
i'm fine with both games i jsut hate the DRAW system
Starting a war? I'm just asking before I pick up FF8, ya' jerk.
Remember, when you start assuming and jumping to conclusions, you make an @$$ out of U and ME. :/
dont pick the thing of TONS of FLAME wars
are better yet play them for your self ther both good games think of your own for once
