Took an hour beating The Deposed King, now can't beat Archon
I know the combat shouldn't be easy, but all through this playthrough I feel like I'm really up against it. Defeating The Deposed King I was (and still am) level 20, so can't believe how tough it all still is.

I keep having to resort to my Axe of Rending (?) as it gives me 10% health on hit. I have a feeling I did decide to go on Apocalyptic as it's not the first time I've played this game, but just feel my character is always a level behind. I certainly know I was when I reached the Upper Level of the City of the Dead. The undead tyrant creature was level 17 and I was only level 16 about 25% of my way towards level 17. So I backed out and levelled up, but it still was skin-of-my-teeth getting by him. Only to get killed on the next stage and have to do it all again !!

I've done most of the side quests so can't have missed much opportunity to develop the character. The only big thing I haven't done is the Soul Arbitors Maze. I've also got the first extra mission to do. I do remember they just chuck weapons at you so I guess it will give me chance to boost some possessed weapons if I do that. Hopefully get some health steel weapons I can use.

That's it really, no real question (apart from how to know I'm at the right character level) just some frustration vented !!

Sorry,I don't know about that,I never use boatman coin buy any item from Vulgrim, but if you want possessed weapon you can collect 20 pages of book of dead and sell it to Vulgrim, He'll give you two keys,In the lair of deposes king bottom have a tomb you can use key to open it,And in there it have a talisman can increase the possessed weapon drop probability.
Yeap, I've raided 3 tombs so far. One page left to find for the final tomb.
What do you spend your Boatman coins on ? Or do they all go on level 40 talismans ?
I never used boatman coins and level 40 talisman only need to spend money to buy it.

...GRAB him immediately and slam dunk him to ground.
Maybe I'm lacking a few special moves as I don't know how to slam dunk - I deliberatley haven't 'trained up' in many different moves. That's because the combo's are all too similar and I remember from a previous playthrough that I struggled to execute the moves I wanted. I'd be trying a combo and it would give me some other move instead. So I thought if I don't train many options I have more chance I can execute the moves I want, when I want !!

Well, Slam Dunk is just a metaphor. Any aerial combo should do enough damage to knock down the Archon to ground, and you can take this opportunity to perform any follow up attack.

Since money is pretty useless in this game. I highly recommend to learn all the moves.

Boss fight usually contain 3 steps.
- 1, avoid taking damage.
- 2, create opportunity to attack.
- 3, maximize damage output during Step 2.

Learning more moves will benefit Step 3. The most difficult is Step 1, which required practice and observation.

Deposed King, has ALWAYS been overtuned imho! He has ONE ability that is a OHK, no matter what, and it hits you anywhere around him.. Slams his hammer, when hes about 10% hp, freezing you in Ice, where it prompts you to tap a button to break.. But it always kills you before you can hit it twice.. The initial hit takes 75% hp, and the ice kills you before he even tugs on his hammer.. Its a very cheap fight.. Ive owned this game since it released, and he remains the harest fight in the game.. Not because hes hard, but because of BS like the OHK move, that seems to be nearly unavoidable, short of being across the room..

he always kills me with the same move.. Always at his 10% hp mark, frozen in ice

PS: the room is so small, thaty his whirlwind is also very difficult to avoid.. Most people playing the Necro build, naturally find it easier.. But Harbinger builds, will have a FAR more difficult time!

PSS: OP, I always resorted to Axe of rending as well, but Achidna's Gauntlets also have high hp steal(Read the description), and are much easier to use on bosses... They also build HP a bit quicker, as its not only 3 hits..The Axes are better for mobs, but the quick weapons are easier to get in and out on bosses...

The combos for the Scythes are pretty essential.. The four reaper finishers, and definitely the Dash+attack with ALL weapons! The Meter slam is useless, and some of the timed charges are not the greatest (From the Swordsman, not Thane) But definitely buy most of Thanes

I'm playing on Apocalyptic. Encountered the Deposed King when I was lvl 13 and he was 20. It was funny since up to that point I was roflstomping everything. What a suprise, rude awakening, this fight was.

His overhead slam that goes into you pressing the quick time button does a massive ice DoT. Luckily I had decent enough resistances on gear so I could escape with barely a sliver of health left. Never had a chance to use my teleport attack to heal some hp back so in 2-3 hits I kept dying to him.

After doing all the stuff in the area and beyond it should get easier. You get better gear and what not. Just need those damn resistances and something that lets you leech some life back in between.

As for combo's and skills that you need to use... I only bought and upgraded all skills for sake of the achievement. When actually killing everything on apocalyptic I'm halfway act 2 and still only use the first 3 basic combo's you learn in the tutorial. Just like in Darksiders 1 the extra combo's are there for flavour and diversity, but aren't really needed.

Seeing his strength... Isn't he part of the quest Thane gives? The side quest where you go hunting some real strong terrors in the universe? Like that giant flaming dragon, the spiderbitch as well as king of bones?

My build is a Harbinger Crit build. Going for fast weapons on both primary and secondary. You won't see me using axes/hammers etc. It is my first time playing this game. So a crit build is usually the safe bet to go while learning mechanics. Enjoying both the games a lot :D
