XBox360 Controller/Gamepad not connecting on Ubuntu

I use a Ubuntu system with a wireless or wired Gamepad.
The Gamepad works in Steam and I'm able to launch the game using the gamepad.
Pressing home on the gamepad sends me back to steam, so it seems somehow registered.

But the start button on the gamepad does then not start the game.

What can I do to fix this?

Unfortunately we're running into gamepad issues with Linux, so we don't have solutions at the moment since its an engine issue and we've contacted the devs with that issue. As of now I'd try rolling back to an earlier version of the game to see if that resolves it, my deepest apologies for this.
