Whose to say that isn't why they attacked us in the first place?
Also we're not really immune since we can get infected with the "alien parasite" which I think had an entry mentioning that if it progresses enough it turns someone into an abomination? Don't remember where I saw that though.
Not that it matters because we can just be cloned infinitely.
Also in RE, if you follow the story, it basically shows/tells you how the virus progresses. I do not remember the mission name, it is the one where you track down the doctor (i think) that has contracted the virus.
When you are in an abandoned base and there are abominations in a crews quarters, one would guess they succumbed to the virus.
Sadly a lot of the lore has been removed from the vanilla storyline over the years. IMHO I believe those who did not like reading it was the cause.
