I'm kinda disappointed. Almost 8 years at this game and they are still pulling Unity assets out of their library. Psssttt. What do the players pay you for?
And honestly, does it really matter if they didn't make the assets themselves as long as it works ingame?
Also, don't kid yourself. Most of us paid for this game when it was dirt cheap, or on sale. You barely paid anything for it, so don't get self-righteous.
"For the big summer update 1.8 there are several major topics on the agenda!
First and foremost, we will be adding completely new models for NPCs and creatures that will soon be roaming the worlds of Empyrion. At the same time, we also plan to revamp some of the NPCs and creatures currently in use, replacing them with new and revised models that fit in with the general visual overhaul of the planets."
Did they even revamp any old NPC models? I haven't noticed any. :D
I was a bit let down by the lack of actual changes as well but we must remember that the game is fully released, these patches a year+ after release are not required by the devs at all. I think it is important to remember they are giving us FREE content regardless of the amount or quality.
So? Nothing wrong with stock assets. It's how you put the assets together that matters. Some of the best games I've played had stock or recycled assets, UIs, textures, AI, etc. in them and some of the worst were done all in-house.
There is nothing wrong with it. The industry has been doing it forever.
Even AAA games.... If you pay close enough attention you will start to notice various games use the same sound effects (sometimes they tweak it ever so slightly).
And not just games either. I've heard the exact same sound effects used in a game, also used in a movie, also used in a tv show (all with very different creators/studios/publishers).
It is not only common practice, there is an entire market for it.
You can get freely distributed assets, paid assets, custom work, you name it.
Small indie game developers tend to use the free assets at first until their game develops further, which is why you notice them being the same more often.
Nothing wrong with buying assets.
It's just how video games are made. No more weird than different movies sharing cast and crew members.
At the end of the day... it's a criticism on the game that I feel they should be better at at this point. And no.. I will not make my own game (Owenz) that's just a dumb comment. That's why I pay for others to do so, and will not take the massive time out of my life to even learn how. Sorry you can't handle some criticism about your precious perfect game.
This game needs work and improvement, and I don't understand why people fight so hardly against admitting it.
Why add 10k+ solar systems to visit, when the system isn't at the level to make them varied or interesting enough?
Why not just cap it to 5k+ solar systems, take less resources from our computers. How many solar systems do the average player actually visit?
The fact that Empyrion "can" load so many playfields and "has" so many stars to visit is not really such an amazing feat when the quality of each and every one of these is very poor.
As it stands, the best playfields are ones that are set and hand crafted by people. The world generation is improving and getting better at making more interesting and diverse landscapes, however I felt this step should have come sooner.
I don't understand why they made the game "so large" but yet "so empty"
This Floating Whale store asset, why reveal it to us if it's in such a state? The game is fully released as another defender of this game proudly stated. Ok so why are we getting placeholder assets in a finished game? Why not just wait until they "finish" the creature before they release it to stable?
Decisions and choices, none of which are forced upon them. You can't put a Unity Store asset into a game in 1.8 and not expect s o m e b o d y to have an issue with that.
Buy the asset, use it on experimental branch, use feedback to improve, create a proper model and rig, then test it, then push it to stable branch.
