They were trying to press F on a trader and accidentally moved their mouse and pressed F on a plant right next to or behind a trader.
Having an empty slot would not have changed things one bit, and they may have even been on an empty slot.
To the OP, I agree 100% with you.
I have often mentioned this exact scenario since they introduced the traders. It happens quite often.
A single pixel moved on the mouse can cause this. It is quite a bad design IMO.
Even if they rebound it to a combo key that same combo key would activate a trader the same as it picks a plant. It is the same keybind. So changing it wouldn't have changed the outcome. They still would have picked the plant on accident due to accidentally moving the mouse a hair the instant they pressed F, or in your case Shift+F (or whatever combo).
An easy fix for Eleon to implement would be a pop-up window, like trying to steal from a container when your reputation is over unfriendly
Edit : Just tested on 1.10, taking Talon's crops only gives -29 rep and no longer drop you down to unfriendly despite the red text warning
faction rep local <FactionName | FactionAbbrev> <RepTotal>
The faction command performs multiple duties, but this form is for setting player relationships ("local" is the player; you can also use the command to tweak relationships between other factions, etc.).
The first variable will be any of the other faction names or three-letter abbreviations, like Zrx, Pol, or Tal, etc. The second variable is what you want the TOTAL amount of reputation to be; the total will dictate the state of the relationship, from Hostile to Honored.
I don't recall the threshold values that separate them, so someone else with functional rote memory can do that or you can suss it out from the Diplomacy frame. The range for each is 0 to 30,000, so the range for honored would be something like 21,000 to 30,000.
Of course you may have to guess at the specific amount in the range, since there will be no record of what it was before you got demoted unless you happened to look at the Diplomacy frame beforehand.
Because we all make mistakes, some really dumb ones sometimes, just not paying attention, you click on accident, and trigger WW3.
Also use what Vulcan pointed out, the game is very much experimental in nature, if you need to use the console to correct a simple mistake or fix a bug don't feel bad about it.
If IRL, you walked into a store with a gun in your hand c0cked & loaded and try to pay the cashier, you're just asking for a really bad results. Same goes if you jump in an armored vehicle (police, military or other).
You can NEVER trust a gun is on safety. First thing, you have to always double check.
So, after those 2 incidents in the game, before I enter a POI:
1. I press O to have nothing in my hands
2. I turn off turrets in CV
3. When I get back in CV, I immediately press the selection for the Detector.
The game handles this as if it is real life. So, the lack of caution and safety...aka the negligence is on the player.
As others have said,.....in solo, use Console Commands to reset faction rep pts. On server, there are missions you can do to get back Rep really fast.
You own your mistake. So, OWN IT, don't blame developers.
Has nothing to do with shooting anything........
No, YOUR own mistake for not reading the discussion at all.
As you say, time for you to "own it".
(One mission actually specifically requires the player to turn off their weapons on station approach.)
