SV mining
I've been playing (vanilla) with a friend of mine and I just got to a level where I can make some mining lasers for an SV. I made one and used a circular pattern around a cockpit.

But one thing I've been noticing is, with an HV miner i had been using the paths it drills are "smooth", but with the mining laser... It's a jagged mess, leaving spikes everywhere that are a pain to try and target, that leave "less than 10%" deposits that I never got with an HV miner with actual drills.

Is this normal with SV mining? I had thought that mining with an SV and lasers would have been better, but... Those jagged edges/spikes everywhere make it pretty annoying to mine with. Is it just potentially bad placement?

all sv miners do it. Jank!

It's not you, it's the game. They work fine in space.

I haven't been able to figure out if it's a bug or intended. But at least while the problems remain I've been getting meteorites in spite of the 10% left in 1.8.

I think that when first introduced, they did dig smooth holes. The Reforged Eden scenario still has these smooth drilling lasers. Even better, there are SV mechanical drills that unlock at lvl 7.

I've been dipping my toes into RE because of stuff like that. Even if I haven't gotten far in vanilla... I hear so much about RE and how good it is.

Since I'm a huge PVE-er, and play mostly solo or with a friend, I'm hoping it has some good PVE content. A lot of what I've read from other people seemed to be about servers.
Laser drills are difficult to use efficiently. They have much longer range than small or large HV drills, so they tend to punch through ore bodies and grab a bunch of stone as well.

Small HV drills actually have the same radius, but they're easier to handle. Large HV drills, i'm starting to think they're just straight up better on planets, and competitive in space.

Is there any purpose to using 2 large drills over 6 small mechanical HV drills?

IIRC, not long after they changed those drills is when I started playing RE. I couldn't believe it... Now have something like 8k hrs playing RE solo. Still doesn't feel like I've explored very much.

From what I've seen, they're just bigger and better. Two large drills can dig out a wider area than six small ones. Plus I think they're faster.

But, they're also much more difficult to mount due to their large size. They're the only 3x3 fixed weapon, and very long.

You have my full attention now lol, go on.....
It's still a prototype.

Biggest issue is just how long the dang things are. A good miner, whether HV or SV, need to be short and compact to maneuver in tight underground spaces. So I keep a useful shape and maintain visibility, I had to set the drills way back on either side.

Results so far is that even just two large drills will gobble up rock and ore with gusto. Only real issues are that terrain sometimes gets weird spikes in it where it reshaped incorrectly, and the drill model clips outside its collision volume and looks silly.
