Guys wearing gold uniforms, use a minigun and shoot through walls sometimes.
More specifically, the "Pax Purgartory" trader. They have the same inventory (at possibly slightly different prices) as the Totally Overpowered trader (the same guy who gives you the first quest for that chapter, the polaris dude in the trade station) except they also have platinum bars.
Check Priests screenshot to see how the Pax Purgartory trader usually looks like.
Much easier than fighting the pirate station.

Personally, I have only seen platinum ore on asteroids now. Not sure how it worked way back when this topic was first posted, though.
