warp capable sv
The ones that don't require cobalt. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Maybe Ill build one for the moon first; then build warp sv next

I wouldn't bother with a short-warp SV. I had that choice to make again today, and again I decided against it. I'd be more patient and raid and loot more POIs until I had enough to build a CV (and this time for me it will be a CV from scratch). Once you have the basic CV, it can be blueprinted and later upgraded and extended in Creative and the upgrade model(s) blueprinted again. I prefer functional and personalized over fancy. Fancy comes last, as it should when I'm struggling to survive!

You can get cobalt from rocks in the Radiated zones. Go find them, but take precautions for the radiation and assassins and alien bugs. It won't be a ton and it takes patience, but it will likely be enough for the basics, and there are other reasons to visit those Radiated biomes: above-ground pentaxid that you will need to fuel that warp drive, promethium ROCKS, alient trees that reward a lot of wood. Then you can go mine cobalt elsewhere.

If you want a good SV that isn't too expensive try the Merc-AME. It's pretty tough, warp capable, and versatile, and does not require much exotics to build. I sort of disagree with Vulcan but it's probably just a matter of what sort of playfield you're in. My current playthrough the starter planet didn't have much in the way of resources, nor did the asteroid belt. Sathium and Iron are easily gathered in quantity by salvaging wrecks and POIs. For other stuff I could beat down POIs and get quite a lot of exotics, especially by coring the bases and then taking the components back to be deconstructed, but I also like to explore and build my strength before I start attacking. So for me a warp-capable SV means I can hit up several other planets, asteroid fields, stations, explore around and drop a few T3 autominers, or even drone-drill a few asteroids. One rock of promethium, erestrum, pentaxid can set you up for a long time. If you don't like the Merc-AME see jrandall's other builds he makes some nice ships.

It takes literally five minutes to slap together a warp capable SV.

FIVE MINUTES. Sheesh. People are LAZY.

Some people would like a nice ship that is well designed and looks good. :). You can literally make a platform of blocks into a warp-capable SV and if that's good enough for you have at it.

Thanks Vulcan and Mark for your positive comments. I'll check out Merc-AME. This is a great game been playing since Alpha 1 back in the day.

Here's a small tip. If you want to keep your awesome decked out warp capable SV, which you normally wouldn't be able to because of the short-range limited drive: Build a CV "warp ring" that is basically a minimalistic CV with a space to dock your SV. Then just get into the cockpit of the warp ring and jump to wherever you want to go. Once there, get back into the SV.

Alas, if one desires a mobile farm or a medbay, for instance, then the minimalistic CV suddenly becomes less minimalistic, since those things can't exist in an SV. That is why I choose the warp-capable CV instead of SV, so that I can have a mobile base with everything short of solar panels.

I've made a warp-capable SV. It's nearly a complete waste of time. If you're not following any of the tutorial/quests, it has a limited value for travelling to planets in short-warp range, but you are better off with a small CV, optionally carrying an HV (or an SV I guess, but why bother?).

I wonder why you can't put solar panels on a CV. Seriously, what powers EVERYTHING we have ever put in space (besides Voyager)? Solar panels.

Have you seen how much power a medium sized CV eats up? They go through promethium packs like hummers go through gasoline, only even worse. There's no way a solar capacitor would ever be able to generate enough power to match the larger models.

SVs though, power draw is much less. I can see solar sailor wings being a thing.
