Apparently my character can swim
I discovered this after walking Data style over to another island, why does having a gun that does nothing underwater stop you from swimming? :)

Empty your hand with the '0' key. Now your chars hands are free so they can use them to swim.

Underwater content is... not ready.

Someday.

Well you still need to use your hands if you want to swim. Having a gun in your hand gets in the way of that.

How so?

Yours might not work under water, but mine do. It's called modding.

It weighs you down.

Well, i complained about the basegame, sure you can mod, but it wont change the way the unmodded game behaves,

why would it matter that the gun weighs you down? You can carry small shios in your backpack, one gun really shouldnt matter

I'd find it pretty hard to swim at the surface with a shotgun in my hands. I could maybe do a sidestroke with one arm or something, and I wouldn't sink to the bottom like our character does. I think our character can't swim and needs both hands at the surface to keep from drowning ;)

edit: I've played +1500 hours and I've pondered the swimming question many times and I've decided my character is a former spacer and never had to learn to swim :)

grab a 7 pound piece of concrete in real life and try to swim with it. guns can weigh 4-11 pounds and unless strapped to your back would impede your ability to move your arms to swim.only form of swiming i am aware of that does not require hands is the back float and that takes a long time to get anywhere using it , keeps you from getting tired faster though.

I mean it's not terrible now. The one bad thing is that you can be attacked underwater but can't fight back (you can still escape by swimming to the surface). The environment itself is pretty cool and you can find some useful things.

I like the fact we can't shoot under the water. It just gives us another type of danger we need to overcome.

I've found warp fuel (Pentaxid) on lake bottoms on starter planets. Only other place i've found it was the moon. Definitely worth exploring the water. Not much danger using Spacebar and C to escape. Use stride to cover distance quickly.

I thought about that, but until more varied water life is added, I will leave the config.ecf file on default values for underwater weapons.
Yeah, water needs some work. The big holes I can see in need of filling are underwater hostiles/predators and ways to fight them, vehicle adaptations to allow vessels to passively float and/or operate underwater, and water propagation/removal so water fills in removed terrain and clears out of pressurized vessels and bases. Base- and vessel-mounting water harvesting equipment would be nice, too, but that's a different thread.

Still, it's not as though I'm not planning for my next base to be a large sea tower. I got really sick of opening the front door and being accosted by overly-territorial alien insects. Plus I'm an undeniable Subnautica fanboi.

There really needs to be some sort of warning (like there used to be, from what I'm told) when entering the water to let you know you can't swim with anything in your hands.

It took me forever and almost drowning to figure this out too.
