What happened to flying in creative mode?

Since 6.0 I am completely grounded in creative mode (without a ship) where I used to be able to go up/down and hover. J toggle doesn't do anything anymore.

You need to give yourself some armor, since flight is tied to the jetpack. You no longer start with a jetpack or armor of any kind, so you need to either use a command or place an armor station and craft or spawn at least some light armor.

I just press the ~ key and type godmode. I find godmode is way better to design things with because you can fly through blocks and you can fly much faster than ships by holding left ctrl

If you continue a game started before 6.0 you'll spawn without armour, thus without jetpack.
Either start a new creative game, or give yourself an armour through commands.

Yes there is an armour slot. You also start with a default armour - I have just checked.
Hit "j" to activate the jetpack.
