Xbox 360 controller in Half life 2 and episode one?
I have the Orange Box on my laptop. Portal, Episode two and Team Fortress work flawlessly wiht my xbox 360 controller. But HL2 and HL2 episode one don't seem to have automatic xbox 360 controller support. I read the page in steam showing what to do but I still can't understand it fully. I managed to get it working but it still feels not complete and I am pretty sure I am missing something. So, please explain in detail what to do with the damn cfg file as if I am the biggest noob on the earth :)

Can you explain in detail what you mean by this?

Well the hud on screen is not working properly I think and I still have to map all the controls via the menu. The mapping settings were in the explanation so I thought that shouldn't be done manually. And this is only about episode one (I mean that partial solution done by me). I couldn't manage to do it in the original Half-life 2. I used the same cfg file I created for episode one but the controlls were all over the place. I'm still trying to make it work for both Episode one and Half-life 2 the same way the controls are working in Portal and episode 2, so any help is appreciated :)

So over on the Mouse tab in options, should be a checkbox for enable joystick. That's checked, I'm assuming?

I'm playing HL2EP2 now, and just finished HL2EP1 earlier today with the 360 pad. Also important: Is this a Microsoft-branded wired 360 pad? I've had trouble with off-brand pads on other games.

IT's the original xbox 360 pad and I need the exact cfg file

Why on earth would someone use a controller if they have a keyboard and mouse? Baffling, but yeah Portal, TF2 and Episode 2 had a far newer version of the source engine when they came out, everything older than episode 2 still has pretty much the same engine they had in 2004.

Why on earth would someone care if someone is using a controller in a single-player, non-competitive game?

OP, you shouldn't need any config file. If it's an MS branded wired 360 pad, it should work without any extra files or drivers.

I got a laptop and playing those games on my 40" LED HDTV would be pretty nice....Does that make sense for you...?

Well, it appears I need a config file for the original HL 2 and episode one (i kinda made it in episode one but still searching for a solution in HL2) the rest of the orange box have build in xbox 360 controller support. Once again, an help is appreciated :)

P.S it's a branded Xbox 360 controller. Not even the one for windows. It says xbox 360 only. But my laptop recognises it as Xbox 360 controller for windows. So, yeah its a branded one :)

There is literally no difference between the "for Windows" and the regular one. I bought the 360 one from Walmart's X-Box section, plugged it right in, and HL2 runs fine with it. I'm not sure why you need a config file at all.

Why do some people get sooooo upset when you say you want to play a PC game with a 360 controller? Just an observation, also the wired 360 pad works perfectly with all the Half Life 2 games, not with Half Life 1 though.

Do you know how to open the developers console?

Try opening it and typing exec_360controller

I already tried that.It says cannot exec 360 controller or something like that. I am pretty sure it need the cfg file which I don't know how to make.

I am having this same issue with a controller. There doesn't seem to actually be native controller support for this game. I even tried to plug in a wired 360 controller but it just doesn't work. Even with plug in templates the gamepad doesn't respond. Sometimes its partially responsive, but the triggers never work or the "A" button.

Its really disappointing.
