"Ah finally, I destroyed that annoying Strider," *about to leave* ..."What? Hang on, there's not supposed to be another one!"
It only happened once, sometime ago when I was playing through Ep1 again. I don't know why, it's obviously an uncommonly rare glitch that could happen, I've thought that it could've been cause I destroyed the Strider in a different way, like maybe it died without me having to use rockets, and then another one appeared, cause I had to kill it with rockets, but no more appeared after the rocket-killed strider.
change "pizdawf=true" to "pizdawf=false"
I wasn't at the end part yet with more rockets, got there, used only rockets to kill it, and another one didn't spawn. Seems like an oddly specific thing to write into that mission.
So I did what any good gamer would do, I turned on every cheat I could find and re-loaded that game. Murdered the second strider, and immediately got a third. So I started testing things out a bit, and I think it's a case of slightly over-zelous level design.
So I think the idea is, when you first enter the area, and the strider appears, if you managed to find a reasonable vantage point and kill the strider with rockets or something, then there would be nothing to trigger the collapsing containers that you eventually climb. So probably someone at valve decided, well, if you do do that, I'll just auto-spawn another strider, problem solved (I'm unhappy about this design on it's own, but fine) Worse, however, it appears their "If Strider Dead: spawn strider" code was also keyed off of you being on the right side of the train. So even once you're down at the train, if you don't cross the train at least once, the striders will keep spawning as soon as you kill them. At least with my checking so far this seems pretty reproducible.
Assuming I'm right, I hope this helps someone else who comes across this 5 year old thread.
