DOOM
Copying Doom from another PC
hi,

Please can someone assist, i have capped internet, so i copied dooms files from a mates pc. i have installed doom from the disc, but cannot just replace the files and have it work. It keeps wanting to download the entire game.

Please can someone assist. I have tried to reinstall but had no luck. Once i reinstall it creates a folder with a number format in the Steamspps>downloading folder. example "488594". the files in that folder matches what i copied from a friend, but replacing these files does not lead to steam noticing.

Please assist.

You can't "copy" it. He needs to actually download and install it.

Is there really no way. I bought it, but i cannot download it due to my cap being finished. so money wasted :(
do a backup like you do on steam -> Back up and restore.

after back up copy the backup folder to your PC asnd then Steam -> back up and restore but you obviously restore.

i do that with my laptop take it to work use the free wifi (in a mall) and download quicker than my uncapped internet (not very fast)

Think you need this file too : appmanifest_379720.acf from the steamapp folder.

In steam options Select your Steam Folder where games will be installed, copy all DOOM files to DOOM folder that is in that Steam Folder, Start Steam, Right Click DOOM in games list, select install and Steam will look for the DOOM files and download any missing, then play. I do this with my 2 HDDs that just have Steam Games installed so i dont have to re-download them when ever i do a full reinstall.

As others have already stated, have your friend back up his game. Copy his backup and put on your PC. If you already officially own it through steam, you'll be able to restore it to your PC from his backup without having to download anything but future updates. The backups won't allow it to be pirated or carry any of your fiends usage over with it.

Thanks guys ! The backup and restore works. So keep that in mind for all purchased games. Thats the only way. Free to play games are a bit simpler and you can just copy the game file and verify.

Or you could just copy the game folder and then Steam will verify them on the new PC...

This isn't working with DOOM, it is what I normally do though.

do a back up, and register your copy of doom on the PC you want it on, if your not using the same account, then restore from backup instead of downloading it

it works, but you need to copy the appmanifest_379720.acf file too from your friend, then Steam will be able to verify the game folder/files. just installed it this way recently.

I haven't downloaded the game from Steam because their downloading is s*hitty, I downloaded a Pirated copy, and asked one of my friends to send me the appmanifest of the game, then I just had to update it and it worked.

Step 1. Start the download on your computer. Pause it. Exit steam.

Step 2. Copy the doom files from your friend's computer, to your computer. I assume you know where to place them. Copy except the two exe files.

Step 3. Launch steam on your computer, and resume the download.
Steam will say "Discovering existing files for DOOM..."

Step 4. When the download and install has finished, it should "validate" automatically, if not, manually verify the files.

I hope this helps.
