Is the map a useless mess?
Is it just me or the map is pretty much useless?

Starting with the lack of depth cues, the lack of indication of plane transitions (elevators included) and the restricted zoom and rotation, I think the map is a horrible mess.

To make things worse, the scrolling doesn't honor remapped keys. It always moves with WASD regardless of your key selection (I use ESDF).

Am I alone?
Is anyone able to make any sense from it?
Am I missing something?
Is Santa Claus real?

Any help is welcome.

Right mouse click hold will spin and tilt. It takes some getting used to for sure but it's not the worst map ever.

Why not just use WASD?

Yeah, I know about the mouse controls.
In any case, I never complained about the controls, did I?
I'm just saying that the map is a bunch of disjointed pieces in which you don't have any idea of how to transition from one to the next.

Sure. Why not just remove the option to remap keys altogether and have everyone play with the layout Tink likes?

my maps always moving too. not even pressing wasd or switch off any controller, or unplug, the map is still moving (mostly) downwards...not everytime when I use it, but oftly...and its really annoying when you'll studiing the different layers, hiddens, etc.

Nice if that bug would be fixed...

MY PC:
AMD FX8320@4GHz, 8 GM DDR3 RAM, Sapphire R9 270x 2GB, ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0.
Windows 10 Pro is the OS.

yep its shiz
ontop it is a 3d model of the map not an actual system that draws a map depending on the level layout
its a different thing and some map parts dont match up because of this

I didn't like the automap either. It does help sometimes but not always and I usually don't want to open it around the times it would be useful just in case.

Even Doom 1 and 2's maps weren't very good until GZDoom allowed overlay's but that is just me being used to Marathon's one.

Doom 1 and 2's map problems were more to do with the arrow constantly swinging around and making me dizzy when I tried to focus on it than actual problems so I give them a pass.

Marathon's automap had a much smaller triangle arrow which helped, though I'd end up looking down or up after coming out due to the game's freelook.

Since Doom 4's one does at least occasionaslly help, it's sort of like the Descent automap in a diffferent context.

It's also SUPREMELY annoying when you're trying to get to a certain place, and you shift the map from its original player-relative position, visualize your path, and upon closing and reopening it, it's again in player-relative mode so your visualized path is gone and you're forced to rotate the map again.

It takes some getting used to, it's not useless.

The map is fine if you take more than 10 seconds to play with the controls to manipulate it effectively.

The parts of the map that aren't completely filled in are the secret areas, as you still need to take notice in the game to find the switches, walkways and jumps to get to most of them. Most secrets have pipes leading to them, or are in areas just off to the side of the obvious path through the level, or in ceilings and not really hidden away at all.

If you unlock the perk that lets you see all the points of interest on the map you will easily find your way around.

Agreed, that's annoying.

Um, again, no. My problem is not with the controls, or with parts of it being missing.
It's mostly the lack of indications on how to transition between one "piece" to another that's a mess.

Your problem is not being able to use the map as an additional tool to get where you're going, and being able to see whats in front of your face, or under your feet, or above your head, in the game.

The map is fine, using it I've found almost all the secrets, health/ammo/armour hell energy upgrades, challenge runes and dead T3 guards in the campaign, and the marjority of the secret levels and collectibles.

Again, unlocking the perk that indicates all the points of interest on the map at the start of the level will show you virtually everything you need to know.
