Theft is OP, miller's prices are insane.
Anyone else thinks that stealing stuff is way too good for making money? I'm literally just starting my proper training at Rattay (the quest right after you re-unite with your lord), and I show up in full-chainmail, with a proper helmet and sword - even though you are clearly supposed to be in your peasant rags.

I got all of that for a couple of miller's quests and collateral stealing (once you break into smb's house, you might as well steal everything you can, not only quest item, lol), and some accidental stealing (was on my way to a quest, not on dedicated stealing spree) from easy lockers around Rattay - some of those are not even indoors and are positioned in quiet places, begging to be robbed.

There is literally no drawbacks to stealing stuff - it's easy enough to make sure that nobody sees you, and you're perfectly safe. WH tried to counter-balance this by adding x-ray eyed guards, who seem to stop you for a search ONLY if you're carrying a substantional amount of stolen goods, and never bother you if you're clean, regardless of how you're dressed (I was on two identical, save-scummed runs just to test this - one in typical townsfolk apparel, second one in my aforementioned full-chainmail set. After I robbed 2 easy chests and had around 700 Groschen worth of stolen loot on me, I was stopped in both cases at pretty much exact place - town square in Rattay).

Problem is - apart from being totally gamey, immersion breaking and poorly-designed, this system simply doesn't work - when prompted to be searched, all you need to do is to find a nice and quiet place with no bystanders (a couple is ok too) and throw out all your stolen stuff. You can do this right in front of a guard - they don't care. After surrendering to a search (and coming out clean, obviously), you can simply start picking up your stuff - just make sure that nobody sees you in the process, as somehow everyone will know that the stuff you're picking up is 100% stolen. There is probably some hidden cooldown on searches, because even if you pick up everything at once (and reach that hidden stolen loot worth treshold), you won't be stopped for another search - don't know for how long though.

So, stealing is pretty safe. But it's also insanely profitable - I have no problem sucking dry miller out of his usual 500-600 groschen - the prices of stolen goods are very high. Even though you sell for less than stated in your inventory, the actual price is way higher than in pretty much any other RPG that has black market for stolen stuff.

Even though this is an RPG and everyone is free to choose his own path, I know for certain that it will be VERY hard to abstain from stealing when I'll be on my "good guy" playthrough - it's THAT good and easy.

Yeah, the same.

Even if you don't want or plan to sell the stuff you stole, you can quickly steal some pretty OP Armor and Weapon/Bow.

Granted, you won't be able to use the strongest very early, since you most likely lack the stats, but once you have the stats, you'll be able to use them immediately.

I don't think I'll ever need to buy any armor or weapon ever. I just robbed the hunter in Rattay, and now I am in possession of some of the stronger, maybe even strongest Bows. Why should I ever want to buy any Bows now?

I don't rob myself, very rarely do in games, the few times I do I always found it broke the game (Fallout 2 anyone).

That being said, you get decent money and items just from killing bandits. Not as good as stealing but more than sufficient to buy everything you need and you get very good stuff from bandits

I agree that the prices are too good - I even sell my non-stolen loot to millers. Aside from that, I strongly think that crime should remain as is. It's well-designed, a good balance between observant guards & citizens and risk & profit, especially if you're disinclined to reload when a heist doesn't go your way.

Also why should you *have* to buy bows, anyway? If you can steal one, you're good. I don't see the problem.

I got tired of stealing back in TES 3, 4 and 5 (Morrowind Oblivion and Skyrim) -> I find it that it takes away fun from game and the challenge. In KCD I stolen few petty things but nothing major - some food and leather pelts. I loot everything from foes i kill in fight, or if i find any dead corpses.

Robbery in Fallouts is only easy & profitable if you save scum. Otherwise you get whole settlements on your neck, permanently, and that often means gg.

Bah, just do some ''kill those bandits'' mission and you will be rich in no time. Where i am at now it's 625 currency PER ear, that's without counting the leader ear himself and the loot their corpse gives. Im sitting with 20k and all the best equipment merchants can offer me.I just feel like money should be harder to get as a whole, or maybe i just have no life idk.

which is why I don't mind the save system in place here...keeps me honest ;)

I feel this as well, I know of three ways to make decent coin

- Robbery
- Mercencary work (Killing bandits etc)
- Hunting (Hunting & cooking meat)

All those will earn money really quickly. I don't "mind" it but I was expecting good gear & money would be harder to come by considering all the hype about how Henry was just some poor blacksmiths son.

I've been searched by the guards plenty of times with no stolen items on me.

lol once your stealh is high enough guards don't even care about you anymore. (unless I just broke my game) I've been murdering guards and civilins in front of guards and they don't even notice they just shout they got to be around here somewhere xD it's a laugh tbh xD

Full plate and a state-of-the-art sword, worth like 20k+ here.

I mean, i went to a tavern and found a full-plate helmet that was worth 2700...like...yeah, i could "Earn" the money by spending hours on end, or i just sweep through the city. The only thing i don't understand is how the "cooling down" works. Because some items begin to turn normal after a while and i think it is tied to their worth.

Still, would be a bummer to have to wait out 2 weeks for a harnish to become useable

Well, according to in-game tutorial, the duration of 'stolen' mark on items IS tied to their worth.
It's explained this way - more valuable stuff is more likely to be recognized by merchants, because really valuable stuff was quite rare in medieval times, and in rather small communities it was easily recognizable. Moreover, former owners are likely to keep searching for their stuff, asking around and thus raising awareness that this particular set of items is stolen. And all of that makes sense.

I wouldn't mind if that duration increased - IMO it's too short for really valuable items.

I think the guards conducting a search goes by rep with that town.

If some unfortunate guard prompts to search me while I'm carrying stolen goods I let them search me. Then I follow them to a nice and quiet place with no bystanders and stealth kill them from behind and loot them all back lmao. I have never had this much fun stealing stuff in a game ever before.
