Maces are "OP", huh?
I see this post all over the place, and while iys true they do great damage against armored enemies, I find it nearly impossible to land a blow with one! Longswords are definitely much easier. If I so happen to get off an attack without being blocked, or countered, it falls far short of my opponent 9/10 times! Its infuriating .. And before you say 'git gud', Im doing great, at 120 hrs in.. Ive used maces most of the time throughout the game, even against unarmored targets. Ive been sure to train up everything, and max out my training with Robard. Im no master at combos, but lets face it, they only work after a parry, and usually only against incompetent opponents!

Ive looked everywhere, and all I see is praise for the mace.. Am I really the only person who has a far harder time using maces, than any other weapon? Axes being a very close second.. (though theyre my lowest level weapon training admittedly)

Dont even get me started on tryign to fight 3 enemies or more! The targeting system destroys that for me. And theres always one guy who gets off a 5 hit combo on my back in that situation, halving my hp!

Get Gud....

But in all seriousness get gud.

While the first one was a joke the second one is the actual advice. You can get free hits on people by winning a clinch or perfect blocking them. The mace only really needs to hit once or twice to end most fights. Earn your free hit and smack in the head.

After switching to the mace, I came to the conclusion that the devs. are trolling us with swords.
Swords: 20 min. of elaborated swordfighting without achieving anything.
Maces: 20 sec., two hits, done.

Im using Lord Han's longsword with dmg 74, even armored guys comes down fast.

Yeah, multi enemy battles sucks, when Im attacking camps, I prey to God its raining so I can sneak and sneak kill them.

Its because of the reach.
Sure, it is"safer" to use maces since you can equip a shield with it and still do combos, not to mention the blunt damage that works against almost all enemy types. But, longswords are sooo satisfying to use since they have that reach that other weapons lack (except polearms, but they are quite slow). And I found it easier to execute combos and master strikes with a longsword than any other weapons.

I am a baddie who is pro at the art of backpedaling so I have to use the long sword for reach advantage.

Yep I have watched streamers lay the smack down using long swords vs multiple plated opponents quite easily.

That matches my impression I've made in the first playthrough. I had started with a focus on longswords including gaining skill points, but when I switched to a warhammer with hardly any skill, it was so much more efficient against a multitude of differently armored opponents.

Strangely, I haven't been able to reproduce it while playing on hardcore mode and went back to longswords.

Maces are great late game weapons when you are against heavily armored enemies that is able to block you. Two handed swords are still my go to weapon for most of the game, if no the whole game. The combo's is just engraved in me so it comes out naturally at this point.

Bandits in leather / gambison armor > sword (slash/stab),
Bandits in mail / plate armor > axe / mace (stab / bash)
Bandits in anything > bow with piercing arrow :lunar2019laughingpig:
