Thugs in Skalitz
I tried coming back to Skalitz to pick up some goodies only to see it swarming with thugs. Not some ordinary thugs but guys in plate armors who get aggressive on sight.
I have 20 defense and 18 swords, but they are simply way too many to handle, so what's the deal with them?

UPDATE
this is some grade A band - I lured one of them away and despite ok skills I had zero chance against him.

I went to Skalitz every couple of days to harvest plate armour... or funny Cuman hats.

It's normal to see a swarm of bandits there.

When I was lower level - I have the sprint perk thing, so I run in the middle of them, scream at the top of my lungs and run back out of the gates.
Having prepared my horse for some cantabrian circle action - meaning I circle around them with the horse and pop arrows at the enemy right outside the gates on rather flat terrain.

Not going to work - horse drops me off 10 seconds into fight even though the guys are so far I can barely shoot them. They also look more like military/mercenary than normal thugs. Super well trained, plate armor... I noticed them leaving the town after killing some cumans in there and going north. Now I'm wondering if

a) they're part of something bigger (main quest?)
b) is there a way to kill them if the horse kiting is not an option (that's one useless salami that one if it gets scared of distant combat!)

What difficulty you're on? EDIT: also, any DLCs?

They should be standard high level re-spawning bandits. At least I think they're nothing to do with a quest.

But killing them still involves "cheeseing your way through things" if you can't handle multiple difficult enemies (neither can I).

Better piercing arrows with bane poison or regular poison.

A horse with a bit more courage helps. (I managed with Pebbles at first, but getting something better is, well... better).

Ok, now I feel like a fool, but is there a difficulty setting? I just started the game and went on with it... I have all the DLC GOG has to offer - including the dog helper - which wasn't much help against that guy, despite saving my ass when fighting two thugs hunting ginger
I recently won the tournament with absolutely no difficulties, so thought this should be doable with some random bandits.

So, better horse, piercing arrows with poison and plenty of luck. There should be an option to bring in reinforcements along the way... Or a machine gun... or a dragon, maybe two

Every single time I go past that Skalitz gate I see two groups battling it out. And the bad guys are indeed pretty tough. That’s a weird, perpetually respawning brawl. I would just ignore or evade them until you really build up some stats. One time I was able to lead them out of the gate and they chased me a bit then walked away and didn’t come back.

of course there is a way to kill them, easiest is to use mace, but if you couldnt handle 1v1 go back to practice on something easier, its something up with you not character.

But generally even st.george sword isnt that great against full plate, i killed them multiple times, one of them with stinger no shield, they were 4 and i did like 1v2 1v2, but stinger is very good if you do combos, since most shortsword combos are pierce and it has ridiciolus pierce damage.

Combos? Are you serious? How (I'm serious here!) do I get a combo without getting interrupted every time? Every time I'm fighting something I feel like I'm better off either with clinch+hit or master strike+hit
I can't reliably get a combo against captain Bernard (less than 50% times it works for me) simply because he just counters combo mid way through

I mean, I remember my first time playing I found that little compound just across the river where you save what’s her face from the Cumans. I found them there during the post Talmberg quest before you go to Rattay and actually start the game. Using the terrible villager bow I steal from the Talmberg castle gate and some long distance arrows, I proceeded to reach myself archery by repeatedly reloading and trying to clear all the bandits from there. It was hard, but I learned two things doing it. How to aim, and that unarmored legs make for easy kills because an arrow to the knee is a very old meme and yet surprisingly effective at stopping enemies from being able to chase you on foot. Then it’s just pincushion simulator.

It doesn't take anything special to win this fight. All you need is a horse with a decent courage stat so it doesn't throw you off and a decent bow with piercing arrows. Get their attention, gallop a little ways away, stop and shoot to maximize your accuracy and then gallop away a bit to fire again. You could theoretically take out a near unlimited amount of enemies with max stats and gear this way.
