Playable Character Pack
This mod adds Kuja, Fratley and Lani as full-fledged playable characters.
They can learn abilities, equip different items, use trance and they don't replace any existing character.

In order to have them as party members, you need to press Alt+F2 in-game to open the party menu.

Installation
This mod relies on the latest version of the Memoria Engine mod.
Download it from Github:
┌──────────────────┐
§ Memoria Patcher[github.com] §
└──────────────────┘
After downloading and running Memoria.Patcher.exe, run the game and click on "Install Mods" to open the mod manager.

You can install and activate many mods from there, including this one.

Playable Characters

Lani
- Lani's weapon is her Battle Axe that can be synthesized from a Mage Staff and an Iron Sword. She can then upgrade it through the game with different jewels.
- She can use Green Magic. The green spells are elemental spells. On top of basic Black Magics, there are Aero, Aera, Aeraga, Earthquake, Waterga and Rainbow Wind, a powerful multi-elemental spell.
- She can also use a command Hunt to focus a single enemy: after choosing the target to hunt, her next physical attack will inflict Trouble. Her subsequent physical attacks to the same target will be increasingly powerful.
- In trance, her Hunt ability also makes her cast a Green Magic that she knows after each attack.

Kuja
- Kuja can use Black Mage staves. He also has access to the ominous Staff of the Magi, that can only be crafter by Hades himself, made with a Hamelin and a Jade Armlet.
- He can summon various offensive eidolons that he longed to steal from Garnet and Eiko.
- He can use Sorcery, a selection of 8 powerful spells, amongst which are Comet, Flare and Flare Star.
- In trance, his Sorcery spells further improve, becoming even stronger versions of themselves: Comet becomes Meteor, Flare becomes Flare Star, and Flare Star becomes...

Fratley
- Fratley can use Spears just like Freya. He can also manipulate his long Iron Spear, that can be crafted in good synthesis shops in disc 2 and afterwards, from an Oak Staff and an Iron Helm. It gives him access to a very special supporting ability...
- Just like Freya, he has access to the Dragon-knight abilities.
- From his journey, he learned not only how to slain dragons but also how to fight like one. Use his Rampage command to let him turn into one of the dragons that live on Hera and Terra. The more powerful his spear is, the more fearsome the dragon will be.
- In trance, his transformation grants him bonus HP, MP and stats depending on his level and the dragon he turns into, allowing him to have much more vitality than anyone. His transformation also never negates until the end of the battle, should he fall with that form.

Optionally, you can:
1) Enable Zidane's Pluto outfit, to have Zidane's battle model wear the Pluto armor,
2) Enable Garnet's White Mage robe, to have Garnet's battle model wear the White Mage robe,
3) Change the mod's INI option by opening the file "PlayableCharacterPack/Memoria.ini" and use "AllCharactersAvailable = 2" instead: when this option is enabled, the party formation will never be replaced by scenaristical events, but the game may bug on some battles if characters that were supposed to participate are left out of the party.

Synthesis Advice

The new weapons can be obtained solely through synthesis shops. For that, you'll need to keep a couple of equipments on top of those you may be accustomed to keep in your playthroughs.

For crafting the new weapons, you'll need:

Battle Axe (x2): Iron Sword (x2) + Rod (x2)
Iron Spear: Oak Staff + Iron Helm
Staff of the Magi: Hamelin + Jade Armlet

Plus a bunch of gems for upgrading the axes (ores, peridots, rubies, topazes) and the southern set for one of them, but those should not be a problem.

The portrait of Fratley is a slightly modified version of a picture apparently drawn by Roer:

(The portrait of Kuja is his official concept art from Dissidia and the portrait of Lani was made by me from her 3D model.)

1) Enable Zidane's Pluto outfit, to have Zidane's battle model wear the Pluto armor,
2) Enable Garnet's White Mage robe, to have Garnet's battle model wear the White Mage robe,

If I do this can it be reverted back to the original outfits?

Yes. It's an option you can toggle on/off in the mod manager.
I think it needs you to change a piece of equipment in-game for the option to take effect after enabling or disabling it.

Honestly thank you Tirlititi for doing all of this amazing work :') you always give me a great new reason to revisit FFIX. Also with the new Alternate Fantasy 6.0 adding 60fps, turn-based mode like FFX, Quina's trance being Double Blue, new skills and more.
Tirlititi Nov 15, 2022 @ 12:32pm
Thank you for the kind words you always spare for my work :)
To be fair, you have to thank Albeoris for the turn-based mode, since he's the one who implemented it (and more generally, he has done a great job in creating and maintaining Memoria for a long time). Also, Iamgoofball helped me with the 60 FPS feature.

I'm glad it makes people keep enjoying the game.

Question. I noticed Beatrix is included in this pack, I'm not at the point of recruiting her yet. Will this cause issues?
Tirlititi Nov 15, 2022 @ 2:20pm
No it shouldn't.
You'll see her in Alexandria after getting the airship as if she wasn't already with you and recruit her there. (If you don't recruit her at that point, she'll still be in your team but you won't see her in most cutscenes.)

I installed the mod and ever since I did, for some reason all Blk magic has no effect on anything, even when I disable the playable character mod. I also installed HD Chocographs but I don't think that would mess that up?

Hey, I wanted to say thanks so much for your work on this. Can't even express how amazing it is to see the game brought back to life like this.

I've just installed a number of the new mods and no one was able to do any damage to enemies with physical attacks ('jump' excluded). The normal attacks aren't even registering sprite reactions from enemies. Have I messed something up?

Hello Blaxxshadow and Enkidu_Prime

You both have the same problem. It's almost certainly a mismatch between DLLs. I am not sure of how/why it happens, but please can you do the following?
1) Confirm that the bug persists when no mod at all is activated in the Mod Manager,
2) Browse the game's directory, specifically "FINAL FANTASY IX/StreamingAssets/Scripts/" and tell me what is the "Date modified" of the file "Memoria.Scripts.dll" (it everything was fine, it should be the moment you ran the Memoria.Patcher.exe, but I suspect it was not updated for some reason and thus the date of the latest modification would be a long time ago),
3) Also go in "FINAL FANTASY IX/StreamingAssets/Scripts/Sources/Battle" and tell me the most recent "Date modified" of the files in that folder.

If the date modified of the DLL is a long time ago and if the date modified of the .cs files is the time at which you ran the updater, then running "FINAL FANTASY IX/StreamingAssets/Scripts/Compiler/Memoria.Compiler.exe" should update the DLL and fix the issue for you. I'll then need to understand why it wasn't done automatically.

Turned of mods, magic was working again.

The modified date for Memoria.scripts.dll is 11/14/2022.

The modified dates for the files in Sources/Battle ranges from 5/25/2020 to 9/27/2020. So maybe this is the problem?
Tirlititi Nov 19, 2022 @ 4:40am
I don't know...
Your Memoria.scripts.dll was updated correctly. The files in "Sources/Battle" don't need to be updated if that DLL is good. Besides, if it works again after turning off the mods, that means the problem comes from 1 mod.

Can you try to identify which mod is causing the problem?
You said that disabling "playable character" didn't fix the issue, so the problem doesn't come from it. It cannot come from "HD Chocographs" either, as you've guessed... Then what? That's a puzzle.

Since your Memoria.scripts.dll was updated correctly and your "Sources/Battle" files were not, it would actually cause problems to run Memoria.Compiler.exe in the end. So you'd better not do that.
