(kind of solved?)Renaming NPCs with console command not mods
Is there a way to rename NPCs using the console command because I can't find any mods on the in game mod browser that will work for the Dogs...

Yes, I believe it’s as simple as opening the console, clicking the NPC, and typing “setname” followed by the name.

HOWEVER I believe this only works when you’re in the cell, as soon as you leave the cell and come back, it’ll reset the NPC, object, etc to its original name.

It’s either that or it resets on game load (the next time you exit and then start the game) or cell reset (however many in-game days that is).

Even the mod Rename Anything - which is just the console command performed through UI elements instead - is subject to this in some instances (not all, otherwise the mod would be useless), it’s an engine thing IIRC.

I think the only way to permanently change the name of something is to edit the actual records in a utility like FO4Edit, but it may not be as simple as it sounds and could cause issues. I’ve done it for mod-added weapons, armor, and items before and it seemed to work fine and not generate problems, but I can’t speak to what could happen when altering an NPC’s name - especially if it’s an NPC or companion from FO4’s vanilla files.

I mainly want to rename the dogs I get from the traps I don't really want to rename any of the important NPCs, because I think one of my other mods that adds the creation club dogs to Gene and giving them the ability to wear dog armor (which honestly that such have always been able to do)possible dogs for sale has made it where I can't rename the dogs after I claim them from the cage.

The setname console command I mentioned supposedly works on everything/anything you click on, not just NPCs, but like said - it won’t be permanent.

that is not true at all, it's exceptionally permanent in my FO4 worlds...

rename anything is in every install I have, it's like scrap everything, I can't exist happily without it.

you can name anything, not even in the cell, not even loaded, not even spawned into existence yet! And that new name is the name you'll get when it's finally used, doesn't matter if it's an NPC or a chest or a dog or a wall segment... I've taken to randomly naming tires on the road "Rubber", cause I love Quentin Dupieux's movies and someone needs to make a psycho killer tire mod one day. you can even rename records you shouldn't even be touching and can break script execution if it's keyed off of name that you now changed

the only time you have to worry is names set via script function; it may reset it once, it may constantly reset it, you'll have to see why in that scenario.

I've never had the experience Fear has. I've left the commonwealth, changed the name remotely back in the commonwealth, stayed in Far Harbour 22 in-game days, and getting back, everybody is still named as I set them, settlers, important NPCs, generic NPCs, road signs, beer bottles on a table... anything, as the name implies.

They don't want off-menu mods. That's why they say 'console' command rather than 'nexus mod', far as I can tell.

Yeah, op has in the past only uses the in-game mod manager, so anything that requires f4se is a no go, which includes rename anything.

Dang it I was getting hopeful that the console commands work

Yeah because I can't get Nexus mods to work on my game, because the last time I tried The vortex launcher it literally cause Fallout 4 to not want to load up when I booted it

I do recall an issue with the vanilla launcher, if it's used to start the game, it somehow messes with any load order that was changed outside the game itself, that may have been the issue.

Unfortunately I no longer trust Nexus Vortex

Nexus Mod Manager community edition > vortex, I don't know what they thought when they released that manager but the amount of issues it caused is baffling

Short answer to the topic is no, you can't, long answer is get the rename anything mod, it works like a charm and does exactly what you want

Is there a way to download that mod without needing a mod manager because I don't trust them any more

For some reason I tried out setname command and it says that that's not a command

Why do people blame everything on Vortex?

"My mods aren't installing correctly because of Vortex!"
"My game ran fine until I installed Vortex!"
"My grandmother smoked for 30 years but didn't catch lung cancer until she installed Vortex!"

Like what? You sure vortex is the problem? I've been through thousands of mods and have like 400 installed right now, and I don't have lung cancer. That's all I'm saying.

Sorry if Vortex isn't easy enough for a Fallout 4 mod user noob like me to use then it's not very good at it's job. After all Nexus can't expect everyone to be a pro with modding games.
