Good place to start?
I don't own any Fallout games and I'm wondering if Fallout 4 would be a good place to start or if it's really recommended that I play Fallout 3 first. Also I'll ask if the FO 4 Game of the Year Edition is worth it. Cheers.

There's little connection (besides the obviously similar setting, and a few recurring characters) between 3 and 4. There's also FNV. 4 is probably the easiest to get in to today as it's the most modernized title. 3 and FNV aged ok, but not great.

That will depend on the player. I played 3 and did not care much for it. The first two of the series, is too outdated for me. However, I really enjoy Fallout 4. 4000 hrs and counting.

And you should get all the DLC's for it. They all are worth it in my opinion. If you plan on modding the game later, some of the mods require the DLC's.

Fallout 4 still has decent graphics. Older titles may be as fun, but the eye-candy is noticeably older.

It is probably the most developed single player game BGS has currently made. There is also a ton of different mods to try after you played through a little bit. From a story stand point most of the FO4 games are stand alone with sharing some lore. As an example there is a computer hacking game in FO3 and FNV to move the cursor around you have to use the mouse. In FO4 you can use the direction keys, which while a simple change makes a huge difference.

Overall I'd say Fallout New Vegas has the best atmosphere and most interesting storyline if you're looking to be gripped by world building. It's aged for sure but still perfectly playable and enjoyable and doesn't have any frustrating mechanics etc.

Regarding Fallout 3, if you were to play it I'd recommend looking into the Tale of Two Wastelands mod which combines Fallout 3 and New Vegas into a large mod for New Vegas, as Fallout 3 itself crashes a lot on newer hardware I've found.

Fallout 4 is perfectly beginner friendly too but as much as I enjoy it, I found it lacks some of the features of the earlier games and does not have the same sense of immersion when it comes to dialogue and exploration.

To summarise, if you want to see Fallout at it's best, I'd play New Vegas.

Fallout 3 and New Vegas require mods to function.
But Fallout New Vegas is less tedious to get working, and will at least boot up without mods. (but will crash consistently)
Fallout 3 doesn't even boot.

Really appreciate these informative replies, thanks.

I'll grab Fallout 4 before the sale ends and give it a try. Ollie you've convinced me to also buy Fallout New Vegas Ultimate and at these prices I can get the lot for like 15 bucks. I just picked up a free copy of Fallout 76 even though I have no idea what that's like but I grabbed a copy anyway.

Fo76 is all online, basically an expansion of the FO4 engine with a multiplayer component.

Ah ok, thanks for that. I'm not interested in the multiplayer aspect but is there a decent single player element?

I haven't played it in awhile when I did it was pretty hard to play solo, there was a lot of griefing going on. They might have addressed it as there has been a lot of updates done.

Only one way to find out I guess but it'll be a while before I get to Fo 76.

Buy Fallout 4 its the best of the series, although I never got Fallout 76 so no idea what that one is like. Fallout New Vegas is pretty decent as well. Never really got into Fallout 3 that much but its got the best start.

Yes I'll definitely be buying Fo 4 Game of the Year Edition before the sale is over. Right now I'm debating whether to buy New Vegas on here or GOG.

Fallout 3 is kind of dated now but there is a rumored remake coming. Start with 4 since it has relatively modern visuals with the high resolution texture pack.
