I need help learning to mod this game
I got pretty far on my own using nexus mod manager for the most part everything worked until I tried to add a face preset no matter what i did the creation would always end with a black face on the female face and a mixed skin tone with the male face and body when i tried to load the preset for female face it would just load the basic face preset with a mixed skin tone just like the male I downloaded everything in the required tab in both the description setting on nexus mod manager and in the download recommended you download these what could I possibly be doing wrong on NMM?

You tried youtube? Thats usually full of tutorials on just about everything.

Kinggath
Good place to start, smart guy, easy to understand videos. Lots of examples. He's the creator behind the Sim Settlements mod line team.

Gopher
Mostly a "play through" channel, Gopher is a also a mod creator of visual mods, and has some modding tutorials.
https://www.youtube.com/@GophersVids/playlists

There are others. But I know for a fact the quality of these 2 creators mods and videos so....

did you download the high resolution texture pack the free one on fallout 4 content if you did that will do it if you disable it .it will stop
Nitemares Jul 16, 2024 @ 8:58am
Black/rusty face is usually the result of mismatched texture resolutions. For example, using 2k face textures on a default model. (2k face textures require the 2k head mod, except for 2 mods that I am aware of)

Also note, if you're running 1.10.984 then changing the Player/NPC models can introduce stutters. (So keep that in mind too)

In the end the game has to be switch/enabled to load external files like loose textures, else you get a face model that is not capable to load what is required for it. It´s a setting in the .ini, where and how is easy to google.

I did see this in the modding thread something about an ini file I need to activate to allow modding I had no idea this was a necessary step

I have tried youtube but all the videos I found were discussing the modding not working because of a game update but on the mods themselves people were discussing the mods work again so I haven't been able to find any up to date tutorials on why the presets aren't working and to further that I wasn't sure if watching their tutorial would help with my preset since it was fairly different mod requirements

Thats the thing the preset would say you need this resolution thing to make it work so I'm very confused it also blackfaced for both with and without I only downloaded it my second attempt to see if anything would change I can try turning it off again though

I'll give it a shot was really hoping someone would know how to fix my problem haha thank you for the suggestion though

you can link the face preset here and we can look at it see if we can spot something you missed.
But we really need more info.. modding is both easy and complex....It sucks to start but as you learn it gets easier and easier. Eventually it becomes second nature :P

it the small detail we need :P

for example this random preset I just picked:
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/85654

To get that mod to work right, there are ALL the teps needed to make this preset work:

Texture install order
1. install Collection of textures and presets for the girls (don't install the esps just the textures)
delete these3 files after installing the texture pack
Textures\actors\Character\Character Assets\FaceDetails
Pocks1_d.dds
Pocks1_n.dds
Pocks1_s.dds
It can lead to a black face bug if you don't, there is some kind of error with those specific textures.

2. install Unfair Skin - choose Fair, yes to K makeup, and yes to eyes

Pack your textures
Make sure and pack all face textures into a bsa otherwise you may have stuttering.
Couple guides that might help:
Guide 1
Guide 2

Requires
Looksmenu
Extended Facial Sculpting
Collection of textures and presets for the girls - Needed for eyebrow replacer and a face overlays
Unfair Skin - needed for the skin makeup and eye color
Asian Face Enchanced
Toothpick Stretching Mouth Bug Fix - Only if you get the mouth mesh stretching bug
Jmenaru Hair Pack - Hair used in the screenshots

Optional
Lightweight Lighting - lighting mod used in sceenshots
Vtaw Wardrobe 9 - vault suit used in screenshots

Don't do every step, you don't get the pretty gurl :P
And what you could get??? if you're lucky its JUST black/rusty face.. if you're unlucky??? you look like someone exploded your head with dynamite.. and LIVED!!

and don't get me started on female body-type locked presets and skeletons!!!!

Looksmenu Compendium page has a DLC Fix file under optional files

or

the High Res DLC fix mod will work

....or at least they worked before the update

that's very informative now does the 3 uninstalls work for all presets is this something I should be doing? I never saw it mentions reading through the descriptions for presets before so its again completely new knowledge to me

sadly the presets I was trying to install required these things and I did try them to no avail if they were supposed to work I do not know how to make them

It all depends on the preset and how the modder made it.

For any preset you have to read carefully and follow all the instructions and requirements

Long boring, intentionally drawn out tutorials to get their view time up that don't deliver, among a ton of advertisements of late
