It's part of the artstyle (lack of a better word?). It's not meant to be realistic.

Military tech evolved much faster as more money and time was spent on the military than public interest.

Its like that in real life though, a lot of civil tech is just re-thought military tech.

It's the theme of the fallout universe. What the 50s thought would be the future with robots and ray guns and such.

The art style is meant to be 1920's. The mix of new tech in a 20's art style is meant to be neat and interesting, nothing more.

I've also heard the theory that the current fads and trends of that age were the styles and characteristics similar to the old 1950's. It's stylish to have a tiny black and white TV in the future.

Not the 20s. Fallout is set in an alternate dimension where nuclear technology became advanced but the transistor was developed very late. As a result, the fallout universe is 50sque.

It's a different universe/alternate history. It's like... what if we did get hit by nukes in the 1950/1960s? What would the world be like? So they took the fun cliches like mutants, giant bugs, and the fact that war always advances technology, and out popped the Fallout universe :D

Fallout's art-style is an extension of what was considered 'futuristic' in 1950's America. That includes lot's of Art Deco and fins. Lots and lots of fins.

Plus, as stated above, the development of the transistor (and the follow-on development of the microship) retarded the development of advanced information technologies while nuclear technologies advanced far faster becasue FO physics are not the same as real-world physics - fission is less 'kill you' and more 'create 50 foot ants' and fusion is orders of magnitude easier to attain.

So you get nuclear powered cars and the main-frame/dumb terminal network model for your IT systems (where they're still not using punch cards and pnuematic tubes to transfer data for five-fingered input systems), lot's of art deco and fins on everything.

This game is set up like this, it is the future of how people in the 1950s thought the future would be like. Microcircuits never took off and everything remained large and bulky like in the 50's which is no suprise considering vacuum tubes are very durable and last for ever. The mind set and the technology evolved over time till the bombs fell in 2077 but the tech was based off the large bulky 1950s view set of technology over the micro sized microchip technology.

Go watch Antique Road Show,

You wouldnt be able to afford just one of those chairs in near mint condition in Fo3. They run about $4K. Many of the object meshes are actually just mesh renders of popular iconographic objects from the 50's most of which is highly collectable and very valuable not just because at the time they were expensive but now also rarity.

Well ok, you could afford it some of you.

Because that's just like real life during wartime.

Keep in mind that the US millitary has technology that is hundreds of years further ahead of what they let the public see in real life.

No, no we don't.

There are several areas where we push the envelope as far as the state of the art allows, and we pile a lot of money on R&D to keep the SoA moving ahead, but the US military doesn't have technology *ten* years ahead of what they let the public see.

As a matter of fact, the vast majority of military technology is 10 - 20 years *behind* what the public gets. This is because, except in those areas where competition is fierce enough to require seizing every advantage (air warfare for example) we favor *reliability*, ruggedness, simplicity, and ease of use - none of those do you get with stuff on the bleeding edge.
