I agree. Also, it leaves shaky ground for mods. If the PC is voiced throughout all of the dialog and main quests, that would mean any mods that add NPCs or content will feel out of place. It'll be a big step backwards in the modding community considering we've advanced far enough that there are so many fully voiced NPC mods for Skyrim and such.
It would be a shame to screw that up... feeling-wise.
And of course, the possibility of Ron Perlman not returning just makes me sad. I would much prefer Ron Perlman narration over a voiced PC.
If it's just for the beginning and end, I'm not okay with it. Get Ron Perlman to do it! lol
If he is voiced throughout, then I would expect one of the first mods to be removing the PC voices.
As long as Bethesda doesn't go the Mass Effect route and gives us dialog options that don't actually indicate the exact words and phrases being used, that is.
Good. That solves that issue.
Mostly characters make assumptions and developers fill in the blanks after i choose my way of response.(aka Bioware) These sometimes lead to good ones, sometimes bad dialogues. Both are taking away from "what i actually meant" and bad for RP but can be fun that your character acts free of you time to time.
But even if we take it as plus side it also means limiting my vocabulary or recording terabytes of dialogue which sadly won't gonna happen. So limitation to me.
One of the main reasons that Dragon Age Origins were better than its sequels was dialogue system. While it had other problems, it didn't make me feel lacking in this department.
Anyway i'd like to think that since Bioware now "working on open worlds" for no reason at all Bethesda counter attacks with "voice over" for no reason at all. It makes me giggle to think these big companies like little children fighting over their "toys" :p
oh, and also, Samus had a voice actor in metroid prime 1 2 and 3, but she never had a spoken line. the voice actress did the hurt sounds and other such things.
You make a good point. However, Kotaku's leaks mentioned casting voice actors for both the male and female PCs, and also implied that the dialog in the game would be spoken, including bits of the script in those documents.
That leak (from 2013), plus the fact that this is the first time a player-character has spoken in one of BGS' trailers (besides Fus Ro Dah... but all of the shouts in Skyrim were voiced, so that only supports the theory), heavily imply that the PC will have spoken dialog.
